At the end of last month, we got word that Kurt Russell was taking a role in Fast & Furious 7. At the time, his role wasn't known, but some details from an unofficial Twitter account have explained things a bit. However, one of their updates seems to indicate that Russell may not be involved after all, and another actor will have to step up and take his place. The Twitter account (via Collider) says, "Kurt Russell was almost about to join #Fast7. He would play the father of Jesse, and he would be Toretto’s villain." So that makes it sounds like a deal couldn't be finalized, and Russell is no longer in the film. But there's good news.
First, let's talk about that little story detail. Fans of the franchise might remember Jesse from way back in the first film. Portrayed by Chad Lindberg, the character was an ADD-rattled street racer and computer nerd responsible for a lot of vehicle designs, background checks on racers, and hacking the engine's of Dom's vehicles. However, in the first film, he ends up getting shot and k!lled in a drive-by on Dom's house. Another update added, "He would work together with [Jason Statham] in the film, [similar to] Ian Shaw in #Fast7, to take revenge on Toretto and his family." It sounds like Jesse's father holds Dom personally responsible for his son's death, but it's taken him awhile to exact revenge.
In another interesting update, the account says, "[Universal] was searching for a bad guy for #Fast7, but he would be even more bad in #Fast8." So it sounds like there's another villain to be cast who would likely show up at the end of the film to tease the next sequel. But the real news is that there's a Fast & Furious 8 planned! The account says, "#Fast7 is not the final part of the [Fast & Furious] saga. #Fast8 is also planned. (But no release yet)." Really, this franchise could go on forever.
So there you have it. There's yet another sequel coming after the seventh, and we might hear of more villain casting sooner than later. However, this Twitter account isn't official, and we're not sure where this information is coming from. But there are photos from the set already in production, so they must have some kind of access to the film with director James Wan. Fast & Furious 7 arrives July 11th, 2014.
