Seth MacFarlane and FOX exec explain why it won't air on network TV.
August 7, 2009 - Thanks to The Hollywood Reporter, we've got some details from FOX broadcasting entertainment president Kevin Reilly about the controversial abortion-themed episode of Family Guy, entitled "Partial Terms of Endearment" that FOX has decided not to air.
Spoiler Alert! Beware folks, we're about to go into detail on what occurs in this episode, including the ending.
The plot of "Partial" revolves around Lois becoming a surrogate mother for an infertile couple that gets k!lled ina car accident. She then has a choice to make about whether or not she wants to still have the baby or get an abortion.
Originally the episode was going to have an open-ending, with the audience never really finding out which choice Lois makes. But then series creator Seth MacFarlane (voice of Peter Griffin) added in a little ending moment where Peter pops his head in and tells everyone "she had the abortion." Reilly stated that FOX made some suggestions for the "very graphic, very morbid" episode but that MacFarlane wanted to go in another direction. Reilly added "at that moment in time, there was a tough conversation gong on with clients, and we didn't need the headache." "We don't censor Seth," explained Reilly. "It was a business decision. It was fragile subject matter at a sensitive time."
MacFarlane himself was on hand with Reilly at the TCA press tour, playing his role during a live luncheon table read of The Cleveland Show's third episode for the ballroom of noshing critics. He admitted that he was fine with Reilly's final verdict. "I'm in a position with FOX where I'm having sort of a golden age," MacFarlane noted. He went on to say that he trusted Reilly's decision "implicitly."
Again, this episode will not air on network TV, but it just may wind up on a DVD set in the future.
