The ever reliable @giteshpandya has confirmed via their Twitter account that despite a fairly sizeable 47% drop internationally (perhaps as a result of the release of Seth MacFarlane's Ted), The Dark Knight Rises took $67 million this weekend. That takes it to a total of $378.4 million overseas, and combined with the current domestic total of $354.6 million, that gives Christopher Nolan's epic finale to his Batman trilogy a worldwide cume of $733 million. In North America, The Dark Knight Rises has spent the weekend battling it out with Total Recall, although it still came out on top with an estimated $36.4 million. This officially makes the film the second biggest hit of 2012 behind only The Avengers.

80% of Avatar's tickets came from 3-D. Not only is this movie better, but it's clearly more popular.

Nolan should've got on the 3-D hustle the movie would be over a billion now. I should say gimmick though because it is but I fall for it and IMAX.

I saw this in IMAX and standard. Don't really see what makes it a gimmick. [pic]

Really?

Not all IMAX screens are created equal. Indeed, most aren't created as IMAX screens at all. More often than not over the last ten years, exhibitors (especially AMC and Regal) have been retrofitting existing theater space, slapping that ever so alluring label on it, and charging the same price (usually around $5 more than a normal ticket). As this image shows, however, the difference between the real thing and what the more vehement critics have dubbed "LIEMAX" is staggering.

Gimmick just like 3-D. I couldn't tell the difference watching TDKR in IMAX. 3D is a gimmick because not all films really have significant enough 3-D. I give animated films a lot of credit because they utilize the 3-D technology well. IMAX is a gimmick because not every IMAX is IMAX and why should it cost more? Because its clearer? I'm not complaining just saying.

No, it didn't. When Avatar hit $600M it sold an estimated 60 million tickets. Titanic sold an estimated 128 million. The movie industry doesn't track tickets sold, but I doubt it ever topped 80 million here.

Because the movie was shot with 3D cameras. Why would anybody want to see this movie in 2D? A movie being better is your opinion. An opinion I share with you, but again, it's an opinion. More popular? I mean this movie is based off a beloved comic book character for gods sake. So I don't know what point your are trying to make with that statement.
