The popularity is mainly due to rappers (TI, Lil Wayne). It's a fad, that's all their is to it, it's what is hot right now. It's almost like a cycle in a way that it's hot cause the rappers wear it, but the rappers wear it because it's hot. Kinda like the throwback jerseys were a few years ago.

With Nike bringing the heat lately with all these damn colorways and sh*t
I haven't really looked at some Bape Kicks since the last pair I got (and my last Pair of Bapes are fu*kin INFUEGO!!! )

But man Im about to cop some Portguals
and Im lightin Dunks up on the Reg...

Im not into the Bape hype I just loved the look they had going with there shoes, but Nike is puttin out some sh*t and there cheaper (well to some extent)
