A recent USA Today study found that just 8.05 percent of MLB players are black. It is a stark contrast to the nearly 20 percent during the 1980s and 90s, when Barry Bonds, Dave Winfield, Rickey Henderson, Ken Griffey, Jr., Tony Gwynn, Frank Thomas, and Dwight Gooden were some of the sport’s biggest stars.



Of the 30 MLB teams, 10 of them began the season with no more than one African-American player on the roster. Furthermore, 25 percent of the black players in Major League Baseball play for just three teams: the Dodgers, New York Yankees, and Los Angeles Angels. Those teams feature All-Stars Kemp, Curtis Granderson, C.C. Sabathia, and Torii Hunter.

Well I mean a lot of our playing idols were outfielders. All the way back to Winfield, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Rickey Henderson, Barry Bonds, Bobby Bonilla, Sheffield in his prime, Frank Robinson, and last but not least... GRIFF... So we may want to emulate them as we're growing up. (Hell I did)

But a lot of it is coaches as. My pops played pro at Shortstop. My unc went up to Triple A as a utility infielder. My little brother is in high school, a damn good short stop, played the position his entire life... And his coach comes up to him and says "you're gonna be an outfielder for me"... Doesn't even give him a choice. He made less errors this season than the guy starting over him. Had a higher batting average and more homeruns. But he's still making him learn a new position at age 16... Seems like to a lot of coaches... If you're black you can only Pitch, play 1st or play in the Outfield [pic]
