this , I remember a Jamaican kid who grew up in Jamaica told me you're expected to say hello and greet everyone who you pass by on a daily basis whether you know them or not just as a basic form of respect and acknowledgement of their existence.

He said his mom would smack the shyt out of him if she found out he passed someone without greeting them.
