Gonna be a fun little card tomorrow > UFC 149: Faber vs Barao Official Discussion Thread - Photo posted in BX SportsCenter | Sign in and leave a comment below! weigh ins are today at 6PM ET. Dana is really excited for the MW division and has news to break Saturday at the press conference. IMO it's a middleweight tournament > UFC 149: Faber vs Barao Official Discussion Thread - Photo posted in BX SportsCenter | Sign in and leave a comment below! with the first tourny fight being Cung Le vs Rich Franklin at the Fuel 6 event in November.

Picks:
Barao
Hector Lombard (this is the most interesting fight on the card IMO. The longer Tim Boetsch stays alive the better chances he has..)
Cheick Kongo
Brian Ebersole (this is his 2nd fight within 30 days > UFC 149: Faber vs Barao Official Discussion Thread - Photo posted in BX SportsCenter | Sign in and leave a comment below!)
Matt Riddle

[pic] I like the sound of a MW tourney, Cung Le vs Rich Franklin would be the last fight in the first round though, since it'd happen after Stann vs Bisping and Lombard vs Boetsch... And you have Weidman waiting for an opponent... I still think if this weekend's fight ends spectacularly, the winner bypasses those plans and gets Anderson next, but it would be a great build up for a dude like Boetsch who they are saying doesn't have the star power to entice the Spider...

lol matt riddle on the main card. just shows what happens if you stay fit and are ready to fight whoever the ufc asks you to.

If Hector wins he's getting Anderson 100%. The tournament (if there happens to be one) is for who gets the shot after.

Cung Le vs Franklin
Stann vs Bisping
Roidenom vs Weidman
Belcher vs Leben (his 1 year suspension is up in November)

Sounds alright to me Zao, except I doubt Dana would include Leben in this tourney seeing as how he got tooled by Stann already, is coming off the loss to Mark Munoz plus the year suspension... Boetsch vs Belcher would make more sense even... it's great that the MW division is being built up now either way, looks to me like Dana wants to do something about the perceived lack of depth in the division, get rid of the one knock on Spider's career

the only problem with this tournament, is will it generate an opponent for Silva in a timely fashion? Silva fights Lombard (in 4 months from now if Lombard wins), first round of the round takes 3-4 months, 2nd round 3-4 months, and final round 3-4 months...a full year to generate one contender...Silva will have a long layoff...

not to mention this tournament produces only one top contender and essentially eliminates all other contenders since everyone but the winner will be coming off a loss...

Bisping and Weidman shouldn't need to win this tournament to earn a title shot...

You're right but we'll see. I agree about Bisping and Weidman but when too many people want it (Boetsch, Franklin, Bisping and Weidman AND Belcher have all came out and said they want the belt) and when that many people want the belt and can make arguments you gotta do something. It might not be a tournament though [pic] and it may or may not be that long of a wait for Anderson to fight a tournament winner. I'm sure he's not arguing about time off

I think Barao wins a hard-fought decision.

Hope Lombard has an impressive debut.

Unlike Strikeforce or Boxing for that matter (SSix), I believe the UFC has the organizational skills to produce a middleweight tournament in a consistent manner. George W. Dana has alluded to the idea of weekly UFC broadcasts, so I don't think it's too far fetched to have the middleweight contenders headline every other (or third) PPV.
