Titans Chris Johnson Finally Admits He Wasn't In Shape After Holdout (Says He's In Game Shape Now)

Chris Johnson accepted part of the blame for the Titans’ struggling running game, saying there have been some times that he’s hesitated more than he should have before hitting the hole.

“It’s a lot of different combination of things,” Johnson said Wednesday. “Maybe one time I hesitate, maybe one time somebody missed a block. We’ve just got to get on the same page. I’ve been running behind this line for three years, so I have confidence in them and I’m sure they have confidence in me. We just have to get on the same page and keep working.”

The Titans will go into Sunday’s game at Cleveland with a running game that’s ranked last in the league. Johnson has managed just 98 yards on 46 carries through three contests.

Johnson said he feels in better shape now than he did upon returning from a 35-day contract holdout that kept him out of all four preseason games.

“I feel like I’m pretty much in football-conditioned shape right now,” Johnson said. “The first couple or three weeks when I got here, I was getting over a lot of soreness and tightness. So toward the end of practice, I wasn’t able to run the gassers and things like that. But today I was able to run them and things like that. Running them and me having my wind and feeling good, I feel like I’m in football shape.”

Johnson said he understands that the Titans have had to turn to the passing game a lot.

“If the running game is not going, you got to do what you got to do to win,” he said. “I can’t be selfish and go to the head coach or offensive coordinator and say, ‘Keep running the ball,’ when it gets zero yards or one yard or negative yards. You’ve got to do what it takes to win.”

Dude needs to donate his first month's salary to charity

Kinda hard for me to respect players who would hold out, then not be in shape after getting paid.

o-line hasn't been #### either. why the switched Harris and Amano is beyond me, Harris cant go a game with a holding penalty and Amano just sucks.

our run game hasn't been #### since we lost Mawae and Crumpler

The lack of running game is not all CJ's fault. Amano and Harris have been absolutely pathetic this year and need to replaced. It's like the whole defense just gets through the interior every play. If the titans want to improve the rushing attack, they need to sign Kevin Mawae asap. He may be old but during CJ's 2000 yard season, he was a cornerstone in the run blocking and gave CJ a lot of lanes to run through. Amano just allows the LBs and DLs to run right through and meet CJ in the backfield.
