Suns could play first outdoor basketball game (Preseason)

Suns could play first outdoor basketball game (Preseason)
By DaRealMrLRP - 01-25-2008, 01:53 PM - Boxden > BX SportsCenter

At parks and in driveways across the country, basketball is played outdoors under the lights.

So why not let the pros play an NBA game in the great outdoors, too?

The Phoenix Suns are planning to play the NBA's first outdoor game during next year's preseason at the Indian Wells (Calif.) Tennis Garden, Suns president and CEO Rick Welts said, according to the Arizona Republic.

The idea is far enough along that the Suns have laid out a basketball court at the outdoor tennis stadium, and team general manager Steve Kerr has visited the site, according to the report. While some details need to be ironed out, an official announcement could be made in a month, the newspaper reported.

According to the report, Suns part-owner d*ck Heckmann, who lives in the Palm Springs, Calif., area, got the idea from a local parks manager and passed it along to Welts.

"It's a completely unique experience," Welts said, according to the Republic. "We like to do new and exciting things. I think it would be remarkably successful."

Indian Wells has a capacity of 16,100 and features loge seating and 44 suites, but no roof. The Suns would need to provide the playing floor, scoreboard and video boards for the event, according to the report.

"It's going to be incredibly cool," Welts predicted, according to the Republic.

lol good point but he is also about making large revenue too and this may turn into an event that will catch on to see your favorite players outside ... something for the new generation of athletes (most of these guys grew up playing outdoors anyway so this would be like a homecoming)

naw it says they supply the court ... so they will prolly build a court to cover it up ... kinda like arena football does with hockey arenas .. they wouldnt allow them to play on concrete as much these players fall and dive for loose balls

that would be a nice lil twist tho if they had the events outside but with no wind so the 3pt shooters dont complain

yeah, i was thinkin sumthin more like in a dome where the roof peels back and with an artificial blacktop court. it'd be kinda tough havin the game totally "outside"

if its not on concrete with broken bottles and one of the hoops twisted at an angle due to niccas dunking on it, then i don't want to see it. keep the pampered nba players in their air conditioned courts, perfectly waxed courts where they belong.
