For everyone saying this is pointless...

It didn't take long for the Portland Trail Blazers to get active during the free agency period. On July 1, the first day of free agency, they took a huge swipe at the Indiana Pacers' restricted free agent All-Star center, Roy Hibbert, by offering him the max deal reportedly worth $58 million over four years, according to Sports Illustrated.

The 7-3 big man has agreed in principle, but is not allowed to sign an offer sheet until the moratorium period has concluded on July 11. At that time, Hibbert will sign the Trail Blazers' offer sheet and the Pacers will have three days to match or not.

Mike Wells of the Indianapolis Star is reporting that the Indiana Pacers have already shifted gears looking at Chicago's center Omer Asik. I don't know if that means the Pacers are going in another direction or just simply taking precautionary measures.

I'm hearing that since Larry Bird is no longer the president of the Pacers, the chances the Pacers decline to match has increased with current team president Donnie Walsh and new general manger Kevin Pritchard in charge.

If that is the case, all will be well in Portland.

The Trail Blazers recently drafted the 7-1 center Meyers Leonard with their No. 11 pick and Hibbert would be the perfect type of player to help Leonard get acclimated into the league. And Hibbert's array of post moves will definitely have Leonard taking notes.

Hibbert is a four-year veteran and is coming off of his best season statistically and was rewarded by making the Eastern Conference All-Star team for the first time in his career.

Last season he averaged 12.8 points per game, 8.8 rebounds, 2 blocks, and shot 49 percent from the field.

I see what you're saying kinda... I'm a Blazer fan, I love watching KD and Lebron as much as the next basketball fan, but I'll be damned if I'm gonna rep them or root for them real tough like that. You got me !!ed up...

Dedos right again, only Billionaires losing are the small market teams like the Bobcats, Hornets, and Raptors. Unless they become like OKC they will never earn a profit. Oh well, ride or die for my state.

this is a misleading[..] thread tittle. Hibbert could be like "if my team doesnt offer me a max ill sign with you" thats a 'verbal agreement' . With asik getting signed this is looking less likely

Why do people have a problem with Hibbert getting a max?

Positionally, center is the hardest spot to fill.

Looking at talent and immediate potential for next season, the centers in the league better than hibbert are:

Dwight
Bynum

Equal to Hibbert are:
M.Gasol
T.Chandler
Noah
Bogut (if healthy)

Might count KG & Timmy as on par, but they're really only part time Centers.

A top-6 CENTER should be worthy of being overpaid due to the sparsity of quality at the position.

I'd be more pissed at the joe johnson contract.. or offering a 38y.o Steve nash 3 yrs/34mill
