Rookie of the Year so far through first half of season?

Y'all no doubt will call me a homer but it's gotta be my boy Percy Harvin. I told y'all this kid would excel in the NFL and a lot of y'all hated on me for it. He's showin' out though. Who y'all got so far?

http://espn.go.com/blog/nflnation/ta...rous-player-09

Percy Harvin had just turned 21 when he arrived at Minnesota’s training camp this summer. He played only three years of college football at Florida, but Vikings coaches had no qualms about handing him the fullest plate imaginable for a rookie receiver.

Harvin was handed duties as a kickoff returner. He was told to learn all three receiver positions, given a role as a spread-style tailback and also became the Vikings’ primary Wildcat quarterback. Harvin never blinked, however, and his diverse talent has made him one of the top new playmakers in the NFL.

He’s the NFL’s leading kickoff returner with a 30.7-yard average, including two touchdowns. He’s also caught three touchdown passes from new quarterback Brett Favre and ranks second among Vikings receivers with 28 receptions.

Overall, Harvin is averaging 158.5 all-purpose yards per game.

“He can get up to speed,” coach Brad Childress said. “He runs with a running back mentality. He’s got 'A' instincts. ... He’s developed a great relationship with Brett. He’s learned this offense, and what he can do, and the flexibility that he has.”

From the first day Harvin stepped on the Vikings’ practice field, he demonstrated the speed and upfield mentality that makes him a scoring threat every time he touches the ball. But in watching the Vikings play this year, one development has stood out to me: Harvin has become Favre’s most trusted receiver on third down.

Harvin ranks first on the Vikings, and No. 4 overall in the NFL, with 15 receptions on third down. He’s converted 13 of them (87 percent) into first downs. He’s put himself in that position at 21 years and six months.

Who hated on you? Harvin is nice and Favre makes him nicer. He's lucky he didn't go to a team w/ a horrible qb.

Sanchez....I know it's been an up and down season so far but I think it's still his to lose. Harvin has been a product of a good system, but Sanchez can make the bigger impact.

Saying a great player is a product of a system is getting annoying. If a dude can play he can play no matter the system. All players are products of some kind of system that saying is played. Harvin is just a naturally gifted football player and athlete, anybody who ever saw him playing in HS or at Florida knows this and now the whole world should finally get it too.

Here's one that's under the radar: Brian Cushing

He plays on Houston so obviously you're not hearing much about that team aside from the offense, but this dude has been making a s**tload of plays every game.

Harvin is nice but that whole team is stacked. He's not Devin Hester on PR/KR so I don't think that's enough. He has some TDs, but not a lot of other production.

Sanchez lol Come on, man. No way in hell.

Jairus Byrd should be the runaway favorite right now for Rookie of the Year...tied for 1st in interceptions in the league and 2nd in passes defensed...as a defensive player his stats are impressive but gets overlooked because he plays for Buffalo

The thing about Byrd and Buffalo's D in general is that they generate 0 pass rush.

They know it and everyone else knows it. So what they do is constantly drop back and defend the pass. They know they aren't stopping any run games so they just worry about the pass.

Byrd has made some solid plays but he def got a few of those interceptions off tips that fell right into his lap. We'll see if he keeps it up, but I'd be surprised.

so?? what point are you tryna make??? 7 ints are 7 ints...i mean Darren Sharper is shapin up to be DPOY and some of his INTs have been durin garbage time, point is they still have them...and 7 interceptions in a season is impressive especially for a rookie...

and dont you think that bein that Buffalo generates zero pass rush it makes it easier for the QB to pick them apart???

if he makes it to 10 interceptions it should be pretty much a lock for him to win it

actually now that i looked it up, there isnt an overall rookie of the year award like i previously thought so yea its gonna be Percy Harvin and Jairus Byrd

Hakeem Nicks could overtake Harvin tho if he gets more reps in games

First, there's no way Sharper gets DPOY. He's the same as Byrd. Some flukey interceptions and a BS TD return if you've seen that SI photo. DPOY usually goes to a guy who can take over a game. Sharper can't, imo.

My point about Byrd is that some of those have been fluky too and I doubt he keeps it up.

And no I don't think 0 pass rush makes it easier when they go with 5 DBs. Shaub didn't have a TD did he?
