Here's one way to solve the 185-pound problem the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is having -- have the champion vacate the title and move down to become a 170-pound problem.

That's apparently a move Middleweight kingpin Anderson Silva is considering now that the list of contenders in the weight class he's owned for six years now is less than appetizing. During a recent edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer revealed a conversation he had with higher ups at the UFC who told him he could reveal a few possibilities that could play themselves out in the future, likely sometime next year.

This is all subject to change, of course, but apparently, "The Spider" is kicking around the notion of vacating the middleweight title and moving down to welterweight to challenge division champion Georges St. Pierre for a superfight we know the promotion is already hoping to put together[..]uming "Rush" is able to defeat Carlos Condit when they tussle at UFC 154 in November.

That would free up the middleweight strap to a whole host of contenders who would no longer be under the long shadow cast by Silva, the greatest pound-for-pound fighter of all time.

Interestingly enough, that could also be the reason Lyoto Machida came into his UFC on Fox 4 bout against Ryan Bader weighing just 201-pounds. He was a lean, mean[..]-kicking machine and his knockout victory was so impressive, he earned a light heavyweight title shot with it.

But he may have his eyes set on the belt Silva currently has around his waist.

Indeed, UFC President Dana White revealed Ed Soares, who manages both Silva and Machida, told the bossman he needed to have a conversation with him over the weekend during the "Shogun vs. Vera" event. That talk never happened so the details aren't available but it's entirely possible, this could be what he wanted to discuss.

Now that Machida has earned a shot at the 205-pound title, plans have either changed or been put on hold.[..]uming "The Dragon" loses to Jon Jones in a rematch, or Dan Henderson if he wins the belt at UFC 151 in Las Vegas, that would finally free him up to switch weight classes.

There's no telling whether or not any of that will happen, but it's something to consider.

Plus, as mentioned previously, this is[..]uming St. Pierre defeats Condit later this year to retain his title to maintain the appeal of a superfight between the two top pound-for-pound fighters on Earth.

It should be noted that it's entirely possible any number of scenarios play out that put a stop to all this talk but with the current climate at middleweight and Silva's unwillingness to move up to light heavyweight, it seems downright logical that he move down for a match-up that would unquestionably be the biggest of all time.

Here's to hoping it happens.
Report: Anderson Silva contemplating vacating middleweight title, move to welterweight to fight Georges St. Pierre - MMAmania.com

Very possible this could happen and not surprised at all. Anderson vs GSP has been talked about forever and Anderson wants it but GSP is hesitant to fight unless he's given time to put on weight. Well, problem solved- Anderson comes to 170 and they do it there.

Also with Lyoto weighing in at 201 and wanting to speak to Dana after the event last week it's obvious he's preparing his move to MW after he takes the strap off Booze and aligning himself up to hold both the LHW and MW titles at the same damn time > Report: Silva considering moving to welterweight - Photo posted in BX SportsCenter | Sign in and leave a comment below!

:shook:
He wanted the fight since before the knee injury though... When will people stop holding Spider to this weird double standard, especially when GSP is actually the same fkn size as Spider [pic]

Revisionist history has GSP dodging the fight which is never the case. Im not saying Spider didnt want the fight he may have but he didnt push that hard for it. If he did why is he only considering moving too WW now? If he wanted it so bad why didnt he do it before the major injury? Im sure he wouldve fought GSP but in a catch weight or MW.

How is that holding spider to a double standard?
The size difference between GSP and Silva is less than the diff between Silva and Jones... And the same fans k!lling Spider for going after a slightly smaller fighter are asking him to fight a 24 year old heavyweight... and ignoring the fact that Jones doesn't want this fight either

Spider hadn't broken the records for win streak or title defenses when the GSP superfight chatter began... Now he's near the end of the line and the fight makes more sense... I'd love to see him move to 205 as much as anyone but I won't get mad at him for not giving up his size/reach advantage, and WW isn't a weak division either

Serra has been doing big things with the pasta since he last fought...he's probably pushing 200 lbs now [pic]

but Serra is a natural lightweight anyways...

Silva offered a catchweight fight to GSP before he was injured and before Bones was even relevant...you do understand that one of the biggest potential fights in mma for years has been Silva vs. GSP?...long before Bones first stepped in the octagon that was the fight everyone wanted...

Silva said he would wait for GSP to come to MW; GSP said he needs over a year to gain weight...Silva offers a catchweight; GSP talks about all the potential fights he has at WW (at the time, those were just rematches)...Silva didn't push hard enough? GSP didn't push for that fight at all...it's quite clear he didn't want the fight...i'm not really a big fan of either guy, but GSP didn't want that fight at MW or a catchweight...perhaps GSP only wanted that fight at WW...so I only go as far as he dodged the fight at other weights...

Silva and GSP both have very long title reigns...it's only right that these two long-reigning champs fight each other...Bones, while very dominant, has not been dominant as long as these two have...

I just don't see how anyone who has watched mma for over 5 years does not want to see Silva vs. GSP...that has been the fight "that got away" for so long now...that is the Pac/Floyd fight for mma, not Silva vs. Bones...Bones has just over a year, his nemesis fight could be JDS in the future...

he was not offically offered a catchweight if u have a link showing otherwise please provide it. legit link btw.

he talked to dana about moving to mw but felt it was too big of a commitement at that point and this was prior to the shields fight.

gsp has never fought at mw, anderson has fought at lhw, thats why anderson vs jones makes more sense. anderson has already fought and won at 205.
officially offered? Silva can't officially offer anything...he said that he would do a catchweight to make that fight happen...

around the time Silva was talking about making this fight...GSP dropped that hint that he might go to lightweight...

Silva vs. GSP makes more sense than Silva vs. Bones from a legacy standpoint...two champs that reigned at the same time that are only one weight class apart...

Bones still needs to be champ for a while longer before he gets to be in that category with Silva and GSP...Bones is the new kid, while GSP and Silva are the two old heads...Silva fought at LHW and he also fought at WW...if Silva can actually get to WW (i'm still not sure about that) then that really ends that talk about Bones being a better fight due to size...

This is GOAT !!? how about no? he can easily move up to his natural wight class to fight punching bags like Forrest Griffin, now he knows Jones is patrolling that weight class he wants to move down another weight class and people are praising him?

All he is about now is money its pathetic

Bones and Silva for some reason don't want to fight each other...so why can't you all stop saying Silva should move to LHW? it's either MW or apparently WW (i'll believe that when I see it though)...

Silva beating a smaller gsp coming off of a brutal injury does nothing for Silvas legacy he'd go in as a heavy favorite at this point. If gsp comes back and wins some dominate fights than yes one or two years later it'd mean a lot but at this point it does not.
are you really saying Silva vs. GSP doesn't mean a lot? GSP has to fight for one or two more years to have a fight with Silva mean something? Bones is the current hot !!, but Silva and GSP have been the hot !! for years now...

give it a rest with this "brutal injury" bit...GSP won't be coming off an injury if he fights Silva anyways...since he is going to unify the WW belts first...

Bones and Silva have said they don't want to fight each other...so it's MW or drop weight...

GSP didn't want to fight Silva at MW or at a catchweight, but I think he would take the fight at WW because GSP mentioned that Silva should come down anyways a couple years ago...

of course if gsp comes back and looks great it would mean something but thats what i just said genius.

but ur saying right now a gsp fight means more which im sorry it doesnt.

and yes bones is hot !! right now but hes on the greatest run in ufc history its not like hes only won one or two fights.

dude has beaten bigger names on this run than silva has on his [pic]
the only fact there is that GSP was injured...he wouldn't be fighting Silva coming off an injury since he is fighting Condit first...so why even bring it up?

i don't know what the hell you are talking about with the bolded sentence...you are arguing with yourself or some !!...i never said anything about GSP looking great or looking like !!...Condit would be his first fight; so him coming off an injury is meaningless to the Silva fight...
