Report: Several Panthers used steroids in 2003
August 28, 2006
CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) - It appears some members of the Carolina Panthers used performance-enhancing drugs during the team's 2003 Super Bowl season.
The Charlotte Observer reported on its web site that six Panthers, including three of the five starting offensive linemen in 2003, used a vast quantity of steroids.
The newspaper examined medical records and court documents released in conjunction with the federal steroids case against Dr. James Shortt, who last month was sentenced to one year in prison for distributing steroids and human growth hormone.
"Several of (the players) were using disturbing, particularly alarmingly high amounts with high dosages for long durations, some in combinations," Dr. Gary Wadler told the newspaper.
Wadler prepared the report for the U.S. Attorney's Office that was used to prosecute Shortt.
According to the Observer, the three offensive linemen in Wadler's report were center Jeff Mitchell, tackle Todd Steussie and guard Kevin Donnalley. The others were tight end Wesley Walls, defensive lineman Henry Taylor and practice squad lineman Louis Williams.
Of the six, only Steussie is still playing in the NFL.
The newspaper also reported that Steussie and Williams were given prescriptions for a combined five substances banned by the NFL - a week before the Panthers left Charlotte for the Super Bowl in Houston.
None of the players tested positive in league testing for steroids.
Prosecutors had already identified two former Panthers - defensive end John Milem and punter Todd Sauerbrun - as part of the probe.
NFL players who fail tests for steroids face a four-game suspension without pay for a first offense. Seven players from each team are chosen randomly each week for testing during the season and throughout the playoffs.
