| | | | | | Regardless of their current three-game winning streak, the Los Angeles Lakers are still searching high and low for some extra talent to bolster their roster.
As the rumor mill continues to churn, another name has surfaced as a potential target for the Lakers. That name is former Denver Nuggets guard J.R. Smith, who is currently waiting until the end of the Chinese Basketball[..]ociation's season so that he can sign with an NBA team.
From Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports: "Smith has significant interest around the NBA, including the Lakers, Knicks, Spurs and several other potential contenders."
For at least a couple of those teams, though, the interest is mutual. Via his personal twitter account, Smith gave Lakers fans a tease yesterday that may have sparked some serious "Smith to the Lakers" talk.
"How many people does staples seat?" Smith asked regarding the Lakers' home court, the Staples Center
There is one lingering concern here, though: how will Smith fit into the Lakers' lineup?
There's no doubt that Smith is an electrifying scorer, but the Lakers already have one of those in Kobe Bryant. The Lakers also need a consistent three-point threat, but they've apparently found that in rookie Andrew Goudelock. What the Lakers really need, however, is a point guard. And Smith is not a point guard.
Known for his ability to create points with his athleticism and devastating jumpers, Smith might not be a great fit with the Lakers. They need a facilitating point guard who can feed the paint and spread the defense, and Smith isn't going to provide that. Unless he's willing to take a backseat to Bryant and work in to the rotation as the Lakers' sixth or seventh man, there's no room for another me-first scorer in LA.
