If you were born after 1980, is your perspective on Michael Jordan flawed?

Now let's just take this for what it is. Large portion of people on this site didn't see Jordans career unfold personally, nor did they watch him night by night. What age does a basketball fan even ACTUALLY UNDERSTAND the dynamics of basketball. I mean the SCIENCE of basketball?

I'll just say 10. And that's being insanely generous. So if you were born prior to 1985, MAYBE you got to personally experience Jordan transcend the game. If you were born in the 90s, I feel like you shouldn't even speak. Yes, you can watch all the highlights you want of Jordan but what about the rest of the league. You can read all the statistics you want, but that still doesn't tell anything about YOUR perspective and what YOU saw. It's not a knock, your knowledge of the NBA in Jordans Era is just flawed. Can we agree?

This isn't a Vs. thread. This is not a knock on the greatest basketball player to play in the NBA. This is for all you Baby-Basketball Gurus & WikiPedia Kings, and even the YouTube Master Teachers.

anybody that wasn't born in the late 70s shouldnt be really speaking on MJ

a 10 year old can't really comprehend the game of basketball, and most of these dudes on BX are my age (23,) a little bit older, or a little bit younger

Stupid thread. Next you're gonna imply that we can only pick a "GOAT" from our generation. And lemme guess who that is...

word! and I'm really just speaking on the Jordan Era. Which was basically the 90s as a whole.

you trying to downgrade the "90's basketball"

The thread is posed as a question. If you didn't witness the NBA in the Jordan Era, how can you speak on the NBA and Jordan.

Better yet, how can you be knowledgeable about ANYTHING you haven't experienced, or studied. If you have Jordan games throughout his career, fine. If not, the only thing stupid is you thinking you know what the hell youre talking about.

Again, it's not a knock just being logical.

So people who study the past aren't really knowledgeable because they weren't alive for it?

what are you talking about du, Jordan won 6 rings all in the 90s . Most of his accolades were in the 90s.

The Knicks? Fool, your mind is every where but on this thread. I'm saying the majority of his career success came throughout the 90s. Obviously he was balling before then. You got ADD?

i was born in 1981, so i know that makes me f**king old as s**t, but in this discussion i do have a relevant perspective. i've seen his entire career unfold. i've also seen kobe's entire career unfold. if anyone has any questions to ask someone who has genuinely seen them both develop first-hand, please feel free to PM me between the hours of 6-9pm EST.

That is the point. How can you pick a GOAT that you didnt see play? I can't speak on Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron or Ted Williams. I didnt see them play.

What's studying? Youtube , Wikipedia, ESPN Classics playoff edition? What's your source? I love it how folks want to act dumb now. Or maybe its not acting at all. You know ENTIRELY what I'm saying. Don't take it personal.

I was born in 89, and I am well aware of how the bulk of his career unfolded. I didn't need Youtube to know what I know.

so all of jordans accomplishments shouldn't mean anything unless u were old enough to see him play? How does that make sense. With technology you can can go back and watch every single game he's played.

i can see this turning into a huge argument. but personally i think the topic is stupid. i am only 23 and i know just as much about jordan as most people older than me if not more. and i remember watching jordan games as a child.. i remember watching them when they played the sonics in the finals, and we he won the championship game on fathers day. and all that s**t. my father watched basketball religiously and i was always around watching them too.. now because i was young u will say i didnt know what was going on. so im wrong for going back and watching those games again???

I was born in 1981 and im from Chicago and to me Jordan is and will always ever be the GOAT. The number 1 reason, he f**king changed basketball. He had people from the lowest slums of the ghetto all the way to the f**king King of England wanting to be and play like him. For that reason alone he is the GOAT. But as far as basketball only goes, if Kobe gets to the Finals and beat the Trio of Lebron, Wade and Bosh and I mean if Kobe Dominates then to me Kobe will be this eras GOAT.

Basically. It's like saying if you didn't listen to Illmatic when it first came out, then you shouldn't comment on it's place in Hip Hop.
