FIBA Says "NO" To NBA's 23-And-Under Proposal

FIBA Says "NO" To NBA's 23-And-Under Proposal
By Moony Jackson - 08-17-2012, 05:44 PM - Boxden > BX SportsCenter

FIBA has spoken.

And their message to NBA Commissioner David Stern is this: We’re not changing the Olympics, bub.

In an in-house interview with FIBA.com, secretary general Patrick Baumann took a strong stance against changing to a 23-and-under rule, which Stern and NBA owners are pushing for.

Baumann said such a change would actually give the United States an unfair advantage because of the advanced developmental system in the U.S. compared to other countries.

“There is also a more general issue of what the Olympic Games represent. The NBA, the IOC and FIBA, we have all earned a lot – not just in financial terms – from professional athletes being at the Olympics since 1992. This is the case with regards to the way basketball has grown, from where we were then to where we are now,” Baumann said. “So it would be premature to make changes in the quality of basketball at the Olympics, especially before having maximised the potential of the World Cup. So it’s too early to make any changes in the Olympic programme.

Baumann is proposing moving the World Cup (formerly known as the World Championship) to one year prior to the Olympics, and making it the main Olympic qualification tournament. Baumann also said FIBA would again petition the ICO to increase the number of teams in the Olympic tournament from 12 to 16. The IOC has twice rejected this proposal.

FIBA also is petitioning the IOC to add 3-on-3 basketball to the game in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

Changes to the World Cup would not be instituted until 2019.

FIBA said no, but whats stopping Stern from asking Colangelo to recruit players 23 and under for team USA?

I can understand why FIBA told Stern to !! off, by asking ALL COUNTRIES to follow that rule.

Because guys like Durant, Westbrook, Rose who will be in their mid to late 20s, but still in their prime will want to compete internationally. It would not be a bad idea, unless they lose, then it becomes a problem.

You think the NBA doesn't bank off the Olympics? How many people watch the NBA Finals? 100 million, at most, watching any one game, give or take? How many people watch the Summer Olympics? 3 billion, give or take? That exposure is worth big money and basketball has become a much more international sport since 1992. This can at least partially be attributed to NBA players playing in the Olympics. Any owners saying we wanna get paid of this are shortsighted morons.

Maybe, but soccer doesn't really need the exposure like basketball does. The World Cup is as big or bigger than the Olympics.

It's fine the way it is. Basically the only shot the North/South American countries and AFC teams have at winning international competitions. Let them shine.

The Euro teams would still probably field youth teams in qualification stages anyway. They already alternate Euro and World Cups bi-annually, which is what they DO care about. And the Euro ends a month or 2 before the Olympics.

Not to mention the scheduling conflicts with their pre-season and Europa/Champions League.

Nothing and if they said yes USA would then win the gold every time like now while using the 23 and under players. Pretty much trying to have his cake and eat it to.

the NBA would make tons of money more by sending not in their prime yet players. Global exposure for the up and coming talent equally more stars and more money.

now Stern must decided if that formula is worth sacrificing gold medals
