Earl Campbell: Today’s running backs look average

He played so low to the ground with them tree trunk thighs, anyone would have an issue tackling him, that's not a dude you just take down on first contact often. MJD is practically a 'version' of him in modern day ball.

I'm confused by what you're trying to imply? Earl Campbell went head to head successfully against some of the greatest defensive players of all-time, former players who would easily be successful in today's league.

The best defensive players in today's game would have the same issues stopping Campbell, so second and third stringers who are no where near as good as their starting peers, they're going to have an impact on his game? No.

defense doesnt win championships anymore its a fantasy football league now defense dont really mean much anymore everything is a bout QB's an not hitting them to hard. running backs really dont mean anything anymore either real talk

He has to successfully make transition to the NFL first though, that's all that matters. If you wanted to compare their college careers, they're very comparable, the rules of the game have changed so much though.

That just speaks in favor of the era Campbell played in, it's a soft[..] league compared to back then. [pic]

ok yall getting carried away.

First off those old school defensive player were mean and tough, imagine going against 2 or 3 James Harrison's on every squad. Don't underestimate their athleticism either they knew how to play the game well.

Secondly lets not forgot the SuperBowl could have easily been 49ers v. Ravens then all this "fantasy football" "QB league" talk would be out of the window. Defense is still KEY to success in the NFL the Giants had an awesome defense who locked down during the playoffs.

Lets just simmer down a bit folks.

I disagree with Earl. This league is pass happy because of injuries. No RB can pound the ball 30+ times like they used too and not get banged up. These players are on one. You have to actually have played football to understand. Yea, niccas had dips back then, but it was only the big name players. Now you have 2nd and 3rd stringers who are just as fast and strong. So ultimately, that means the starters are even better.

theres still no excuss how the worse defense in the league makes the super bowl that shouldnt even happen ever. but you do make good points i will change what i said its a pitch an catch league way more than an defensive minded league. either way its still bull!! how they destroying defensive football i miss defensive games. pitt vs ravens still gives u some of it but not like it use to be

Easily one of the all time bruising backs with extreme natural power. I don't think he'd have an issue getting through !! in the game today.

Besides, you're acting like speed and power is everything, football intelligence and natural instinct alone can make you a great player.

Lawrence Taylor.
Mike Singletary.
Jack Lambert.
Bruce Smith.
Reggie !!ing White.
Howie Long.
Ronnie Lott.

That's just a few defensive monsters off the top of my head from that era, any of those dudes would be great Pro-Bowl caliber players in today's game, no questions asked.
These dudes were not playing when Earl played[pic]

Its a passing league. Look how easy they made it for WRs to catch the ball now.

im a huge ravens fan ray my nicca but look at the last what 3 superbowl matchups

pats vs gaints

gb vs steelers

saints vs colts

only team that had a top 5 defensive was pitt an they lost to a passing team

gb defensive is ok i geuss , saints defense played well that year the rest is [pic]

im just saying defense aint as important when winning a SB as it use to be cause of how the rules have been made. its important but it dont gotta be on some top 15 type !! its all about offense nowadays

Do you seriously think people will remember the names of those 14 players 15 years from now? Most of them aren't even allstars TODAY. There's a difference between good and great fam.

Willis, Smith, Lewis, Suggs, Ngata= great. Everyone else = good

I don't know if I buy that...

I def. would like to see what some of the great RB's of other generations would do to these modern defenses..

just think, Bo Jackson... Eric !!erson.... Sayers.... Payton.... Barry Sanders... and def. the GOAT, Jim Brown...all mixing it up with the new cats...

The results I know would be interesting...
