Though many experts considered Miami the early favorite to land Manning, he never had them as his priority.

A source close to the situation said Dolphins management had to enlist the help of Dan Marino just to secure a meeting with Manning.

The Dolphins' brass did not deal with Manning directly and was frustrated last week when it could not pin down a meeting with him through his agents at Creative Artists Agency (CAA).

With the clock ticking, the Dolphins asked Marino - their legendary former quarterback and a golfing partner of Manning's - to call him personally to persuade him to meet with the team.

While Manning flew to Tennessee, Denver and Arizona to tour their facilities and meet with players, coaches and executives, his meeting with the Dolphins on Monday was conducted in his hometown of Indianapolis, and with only coach Joe Philbin and other members of the coaching staff present - not Ireland or Ross.

The Dolphins did not return a call seeking comment late Thursday. According to CNBC's Darren Rovell, Ross said in a taped interview Thursday that he was "very involved" in the pursuit of Manning.

Peyton Manning might be a lost cause for Miami Dolphins but Matt Flynn is coming to visit

dropped passes and off the field issues were a bad look

but imagine how much more beast he could have been with a decent qb and a better oc/coach

just look at the improvement he had with matt moore throwing to him

now we have the better oc/coach but no #1 WR

His value goes down the more he stays out there. He ain't gonna make that crazy money that everyone thought because the people don't believe he's a franchise QB apparently. Good for us.

Who thought they were making significant progress after he left and scheduled with the Titans?

Pretty sure most of us knew he wasn't gonna sign after he left and scheduled more meetings. I made the "Is peyton really gonna hold teams hostage" thread after FA started. I said move on once FA started.

At least we don't have reporters for our team saying that "My sources say Manning is 90% sure he's going to the Broncos"....then goes to meet the Dolphins and schedules with the Titans and now the Titans are in the lead [pic]
