A massive crash involving as many as 15-cars marred the final IZOD Indycar race of the season this afternoon in Las Vegas.
Racing wheel-to-wheel at speeds around 200mph, the accident happened on Lap 12 of the 200 lap event which was to culminate the 2011 Indycar championship.
But as the 34-car field jockeyed for position minutes into the race, a pair of drivers tangled, setting off a massive pileup that sent cars spinning, flying and burning all across the speedway. At least two cars could be seen flying hundreds of yards through the air, while others caught fire, hitting the wall or driving to a stop on the lower track apron.
Track officials posted a rare "red flag" warning, which immediately stopped all racing while crews a.ssisted the injured drivers, putting out fires and cleaning up the wreckage.
While several drivers were able to walk away, many more were taken to the track medical center. And two time Indy 500 champion Dan Wheldon has been airlifted to University Medical Center, although there's been no specific word on his condition.
Fan favorite Danika Patrick, who was right behind the cars that started the crash, managed to stay low and avoid the debris. She told ABC after the wreck it was "like a movie scene" with cars trying to "drive around a chunk of fire".
