Alex Smith is expected to seek his release before free agency

Alex Smith is expected to seek his release before free agency
topic by TheThreadLord - 01-28-2013, 04:17 AM - Boxden > BX SportsCenter

Its widely believed that the 49ers will trade quarterback Alex Smith. The former starter is due to earn $8.5 million in 2013, with $1 million guaranteed now and the balance guaranteed as of April 1. It makes him a luxury that the team cant afford.

But the player prefers not to afford the 49ers a chance to trade him. Instead, a source with knowledge of the situation tells PFT that Smith is expected to seek his release before the start of free agency.

Its a calculated risk for Smith. On one hand, hes be able to join any team he wants. On the other hand, hed be losing the $8.5 million that hed earn this year if his contract is traded.

Of course, that contract could make it harder to trade him. And the 49ers will have plenty of time to explore their options for trading Smith before the new league year (and the free-agency period) begins.

Unless they can send him to a team for which he really wants to play, the fair move would be to let him go. He has been a loyal member of the organization since he was the first pick in the 2005 draft, and he caused no trouble when he was benched during a very good season after suffering a concussion.

He knows aint no team trading for him with that kind of pay. He's being realistic. Well, maybe the Jets, they stay trading for expensive backup QBs...

How does this negate that?

You think he's gonna stick round and be a backup forever, and cheer Kapernick on for the rest of his life?

i feel bad for alex, he didn't really do anything to lose the job this year, and now he's going to be watching his replacement in the sb this year, a year after he could've been in one himself....

Alex is that ni##a that says all the right things and will place emphesis on the fact that he plays "safe" ball. While everyone around him knows he cant make certain throws while being afraid the let his wrs make a play in 1 on 1 coverage.

the type of ni##as I ####ing HATE

That #### is just the truth that make ya soul burn slow..

#### off Alex

One thing i liked about Smith though was he knew how to utilize Vernon Davis. Davis been pretty much MIA since Kaepernick took over with the exception of last week.

Too bad he didn't utilize any of the other receivers

VD wasn't getting used by Alex either. He was just blocking alot more this year and getting doubled whenever he was out in the open field.. Kaep can get the ball to VD better than Alex ever could so its not a chemistry issue.
