Anyway i did it,took me like 2 hours of work...and now i work with them,i'm getting paid real nice, and have been recently raised without asking anything...if i did have tought the way you do,i would be still doing gfx for the BX fam ( no offense :D ) ... you've got to study each opportunities in a different way... | ||

| true point. i agree with this 95%. this is because, i have done free work. I do gfx because i love doing it, i'm still in school, i honestly dont have time to make a living out of this, and i certainly dont have the ability to make a living out of this, but i made a cover for a dude who requested it as a favor. I accepted the request taking it on as a challenge, to complete a proper mixtape cover, something like no other piece of work that ive done before and i managed to pull it off pretty well in my opinion. it's not always about money if you enjoy doing something and taking on new challenges... | |

| I only do free work for really close friends and even then technically they are doing something for me whether it be business favors or making certain contacts or giving me exclusive material for my mixtapes... but i agree..... I had TONS of people ask me for work! This one wimp[..] club promoter/wannabe manager told me i need to show him what I can do with it BEFORE he paid me..... funny part is I already showed him samples of other covers I did...... I told him I don't even START working on a project without getting paid up front... why would i waste my time making a cover for a deadbeat? After I told him to pay up front he started beating around the bush and eventually stopped calling.... thank god! | |

| yeah i agree on many aspects here . But I only seem to find the "work for an opportunity for exposure" mostly coming from amature clients ... like some dude thinking hes on some kind of jump off , or hes the next big things ... i think thought that this information should be used to new designers as a building block .. KNOW the truth ! , exposure isnt nessesary , you can get exposure anyware ... and why on earth would you be giving out free work for exposure. I have once recently donated my services for free cd cover. It doesnt mean you should . I did it cause i was bored and i wanted to add something to my portfolio that was a cd cover. But if you think your going to get exposure for that you wont get anything special back from it .... if your going to do something free , pretty much sum up your expectations for no return , cause 99% of the time thats what it amounts to. Unless you are ready to self promote yourself with the new work you have made , you're barking up the wrong tree .... be smart , think of your services as money to someone else . doesnt mean dont do free , but realize they facts as mentioned in this thread . unfornatly you wont stop these people from crowding , just like telemarketing , it will and continues to exsist .... we cant train them to leave , but you can be smart ... | |

| we'll like i said in another thread that the incompetent mods of this section can't seem to figure out if they want open or closed... "half of u "graphic designers" are trash, about as bad as me so who the !! would wanna pay u??? granted if ur good I can see u charging but most of u are just trash"

| Good post.......... I was guilty of doing "free" work in high-school and only on a few jobs have the people come back to hire me to do more work for them or were the jobs worthwhile to mention in a portfolio. | |

| I agree 100% with the pay aspect. But just like MC and beatmakers, there is a beginning level where cats have to do !! for promo, build relationships, get their names out. If there is no place for them to post up here and do work for promo/proove themselves, there will be a ton of half[..] cats jumping in the game with no skill looking to get paid. I have a vet graf writer who also does grafics professionally for an est@blished marketing co but I do like to scout out new talent. I do prefer to pay for professional work though, cuts out the bullish!!! Last edited by Eklypss; 02-22-2009 at 11:20 AM.. | |
