Free Work? How Disrespectful Is That?

^^I am replying real late to the thread but I agree with Q.. I am not YET an official graphic artist however I am studying graphic design.. So eventually I will not be freelance but working from companies.. I right now like a lot of designers are doing it for some bucks in my pocket at the moment to lead up to a successful career eventually. But people I despise are guys buying PS and using them to make sigs for forums and then maybe making quick bucks as a hobby.. So yeah, do what you like but it is a waste of time having Photoshop and using it for the quick !!.

It k!lls me when niccas post of their !! and it's wack, then they run that "well I don't have time to be staying on the computer all day to make something hot" act. Well first off, if you was good it wouldn't take that long, and secondly, uninstall Photoshop if it's not that serious. These are the same niccas constantly asking for brushes, fonts, stocks, renders, etc. !!'s ridiculous.

I kind of disagree with this post. because it's not about free work, it's about cheap customers.

It's a caught 22. you better be NICE to charge $400-500 for a logo to a customer thats only trying to start-up his name.

That's retarded. You have to know still who your dealing with. If a est@blished company contacts you for work, you better know they will have real money to back their request.

I was contracted by an Laundry Detergent Manufactor to paint a mural 10 ft by 30 ft.

Like an idiot I only charged them $1,800, previously another Artist Team asked them for $3,000+ for paint supplies and labor. I did the job but I know I could of gotten at least $200-300 more dollars. But I got 1800 for weeks work, and the other artist got $0.00. I win:D

You can't get ripped off, but you can't rip off either.
Make sure your work is equal to what it's worth.

You lose more money pricing yourself out yourself.

exactly. like its alot of cats who race cars in the street...but how many of them are A. making money off of it and B. have that as a career. not that many. alot of cats do this ish for a minute just to !! around with it on some "i'm bored" ish and dont really go past that point.

every artists goal should be to stricly freelance and get all of the money off the rip a.k.a. having your own business, instead of working for cats who skim money off the top

that's the truth and it's just common sense tho. Only reason people actually do those type of stunts is because some people believe it, do it and get !!ed over. Just be smart and you'll get your bread and ahead!

Money is only the fruit of your labor. but not every job gets noticed.

gotta agree with this post. ay mother!!ing men. these days people dont seem to realize just what it is we do and how much value it has. i remember seein a dude coming in here asking 50$ for an album cover, and before that he got at me for shirt designs talkn bout 50$ a design too :O WTF and this other dude i was contacted by kept expecting free work, talkn bout gettin shirts done, a myspace, and flyers. i was like wtf is this dude on to be askin for free !!, just because his producer is a good buddy of mine. and then he gets the nerve to call me up and ask how the process was going. LMAO. come to find out jena from jz-designs.com does his myspace for FREE. another wtf. the world is becoming cheap as !! with all these !!s running around trying to cheat u out of your bread. est@blishing a good client list is DEF a must, cuz if u keep trying to run around gettin at random posers u will waste your time n energy on bull!!. "rappers" who claim to "make moves'' yet cant afford to pay up the 200$ for a mixtape cover can suck a d*ck. talkn bout they got bills and !!. tf u talk about makin moves for then. i havent found a solid client as of yet, cuz if they aint trying to cheat u, then they tryin to get u to "be part of the group, clique, gang, possy, band, crew, whatever", design some !! for free and then get paid later on. bull!!. seems like everyone these days are shady as !!.

the funny thing about that statement is, someone said that similar thing to me yesterday. People ALWAYS this that designing is something "fun" we do
at home just because but do realize that this ishow we make a living. If i do
free artwork, its for darn sure going to help me in through a door i couldnt
get through like doing something for a big corporation. Honnestly it seems like the majority of the people who have "got me" as far as not giving me money
are these broke-ass rappers who make these ghetto videos throwing up the one chain they got off lay-a-way. I LOVE HIP-HOP, I HATE BROKE[..] RAPPERS.
