Valve is out to change PC gaming, one way or another. Steam has become the biggest hub for PC gaming and now Valve are out to do it again with the SteamBox, which we learned is going to be Linux-based. Valve has teamed up with Xi3 hardware to bring you the Piston(codename for the SteamBox)

The Steam Box will have up to 1 TB of storage with a modular motherboard that will give us the option to upgrade the CPU and RAM. It's also said to feature one Ethernet port, optical audio ports, two display ports, one HDMI port, four USB 2.0 ports, four USB 3.0 ports and four eSATAp ports.
The box is designed to play PC games on a big screen TV. The Steam Box will go hand-in-hand with Big Picture mode and can also support LAN parties. No news on the price or release date but we do know that it will be sometime this year. We'll be sure to keep you updated.

300 bucks. Gabe is too smart to price this at a high price. Anyway they'll earn it all back with the super De doper sales on the network.

I'm tempted to get one just because but I don't wanna hurt my PCs feelings. !! already cries enough because I have 4 hard drives on her. Thinking about giving her another baby. Only 40 this time though [pic]

Why would the make the graphics card not able to be upgraded? What happens in 5 years when it can't run the latest games on max?

But don't you know the PC Master Race says that you don't have to upgrade your stuff every 5 years...that's why it's better then the "Console peasents"

Well, seems like the Master Race will be worse off than the console peasants if they don't let you upgrade the GPU.

The original report suggests that what Valve is currently developing is not a singular device, but rather the software and a set of minimum system specs for a new gaming PC category;
Do yall remember when the Steam Box was first rumored? They talked about, not a single console but the concept of the "Steam Box" was a standardized set of specs for OEMs to use.

I think this is the first "Steam Box" we will see. But i think there will be many OEMs making "Steam Boxes" from Panasonic, Samsung, LG to whoever. They will all have the same base set of specs and all run Steam.

If I got five years out of this running games on max I'd be ecstatic. I don't see how you could possibly get five years on max settings at a competitive price point.

this will be very interesting if different manufacturers are able to do this it will be a very flexible device.

That little[..] box is supposed to be powerful?

Whats the catch here? No disc based games = no trade ins. Also if ram is upgradeable but gpx card isnt, how underpowered or cheap are the real default specs? Is that how they will be able to keep it around 3-400?

I need to see more, no trade ins tho or selling your games seems like a deal breaker for me. I already have devices that run windows & netflix etc.

What does this console bring to the table besides steam & being forced to never trade or sell games once youre finished?

Except the catch is once you buy a game you cant sell it. Pretty much cancels out the savings on steam & i doubt games will be sold for cheaper once this drops. This will be interesting.
