Report: Sony to cut 10,000 jobs worldwide amidst $6.4 Billion loss

Report: Sony to cut 10,000 jobs worldwide through March 2013

TOKYO (AP) -- Sony Corp. will cut about 10,000 jobs worldwide over the next year as it tries to return to profit, Japanese news reports said Monday.
The Nikkei business daily and other media said Sony's decision to slash 6 percent of its work force comes as it struggles with weak TV sales and swelling losses.
Sony spokeswoman Yoko Yasukouchi wouldn't confirm the reports.
New CEO Kazuo Hirai is holding a press conference Thursday.
Sony has announced restructuring plans by selling its chemical unit. Sony is also merging its LCD panel operation with Toshiba and Hitachi. Yasukouchi said those changes could affect up to 5,000 employees who are subject to transfers.
Sony earlier this year reported a 159 billion yen ($2.1 billion) loss for the October-December quarter and more than doubled its projected loss for the full fiscal year through March 2013.

Blizzard laid off 600 people April 2nd
Yahoo laid off 2000 March 28th.
Microsoft laid off Over 1,500 people
Sega laid off over 1,000 people

so it's not like everyone else is doing Great...the economy hurts everyone even the mighty

No need for emphasis... 10 THOUSAND is ALOT more then Fifteen hundred... so Sony still takes an L, but I was just saying that Sony isn't the only company hurting enough to lay off employees

Layoffs suck no matter the size...but in the case of 1,500 vs 10,000...the one who laid off only 1,500 clearly won...

Nobody in their right mind likes this.. People losing their jobs is a sad thing, and Sony is a great company. They just need to start making smarter, more responsible decisions.

My point exactly. Sony laid off 10,000 yeah, we can all see that and I do agree that it's horrible for those people that no longer have a job. But Microsoft's layoffs exceeded 1500, notice your post says OVER 1,500 without ever giving a specific amount. To around to 1500 doesn't make any sense since the number is anything >1500.

I doubt it...he's got more money then Steve Jobs died with...and he retired from the day to day at MS years ago...he's barely in the office anymore, and if he didn't help Apple MS wouldn't have anyone else to steal ideas with... Apple stole from someone and made it better, MS stole from Apple and made it better and it was a good cricle that made everyone involved wealthy...

How is that your point exactly when you typed "Sony laid off over 1500 people while MS laid off 2000"? like you're trying to say Sony laid off less people...

the reason why my post doesn't give an exact amount is MS didn't disclose the amount but it had to be AT LEAST 1,500 people because anything less and they don't have to report the lyaoffs to the board of directors... 1,500 and more and you do have to report it... so while MS could have laid off 100,000 people they would have said that many have been laid off...they just reported that they "laid off employees" to the board...which like I said for them to report this it had to be at least 1500...
