Ps4 Specs Not Finalized: Goodbye to 8GB DDR5 RAM?

Ps4 Specs Not Finalized: Goodbye to 8GB DDR5 RAM?
topic by mystic boy - 02-22-2013, 06:13 PM - Boxden > BX GameSpot

The world is still abuzz after Sony’s huge unveiling of the Playstation 4 yesterday in New York. Although the system itself was a no show, many details emerged, including a slew of launch titles such as k!llzone 4 and Driveclub as well as a redesigned controller; the Dualshock 4.

Speaking with Engadget, Sony Americas head Jack Tretton made some interesting remarks when asked about the PS4:

“(PS4) is still in development in terms of final specs and design.”

Although this is an appropriate answer given the lack of any concrete details about what the system actually looks like, it begs the question if the system specs will truly change from now until launch. Sony shook the world yesterday when it announced that the PS4 would come with 8 gigs of ram. Not just any kind of ram, GDDR5 ram. This is the kind of ram you would expect to see on high-end gaming PC’s coming out this year. On a gaming console its impact is absolutely huge given the closed system. This begs the question how Sony is going to price the PS4, having ram of this calibre is probably going to be at-least a quarter if not a third of the price of the PS4. We’re talking $150 a system to put that kind of ram in there. Will Sony end of up changing the ram in the end? Only time will tell but given what Jack Tretton has stated regarding changing specs it is possible that it might. Here’s hoping that Sony keeps the ram because 8 gig of DDR5 ram is a game changer.

I would not be surprised if Sony made half of it DDR5 and DDR3...not unified of course.

DDR5 is just expensive no matter what. That is insane no matter how its implemented.

Exactly. And they post it to get others' opinions. Such a simple concept.

Can people be this dumb?

4GB of GDDR5 RAM would still be slightly faster than 8GB of DDR3 RAM and would also save in manufacturing costs.

they made it a point in their presentation to point out and put some kind of emphasis on the 8GB GDDR5 ram so i doubt they'd wanna remove it now..im sure they've already factored in the cost and would've already had enough time to change it had it been a problem
