PS3 closes in on 360's global sales

The PlayStation 3 is bridging the gap with Xbox 360 global sales, it's been revealed, as Sony's latest financial results confirm it's shipped just 3.6 million less consoles than Microsoft.

Sony confirmed this morning that to date, it's shipped 38.1 million PlayStation 3 consoles worldwide. Microsoft announced last week that its managed to ship 41.7 Xbox 360s worldwide.

The numbers are a huge contrast to last year, when Microsoft posted worldwide sales of "over 30 million" for Xbox 360 in May - over 7.3 million clear of Sony's 22.7 million shipped PS3s confirmed in March, 2009.

The narrowing gap between the two consoles could be put down to many factors, including Microsoft approaching the peak of its audience before Kinect reaches out to the mass market, and of course Sony's PS3 price cuts late last year.

Whatever the reason, the more meaningful battle is bound to take place when the platform holders' respective motion controls launch later this year.

Despite the year lead start,a cheaper price,promoting multiplat games,getting GTA4 same day,getting FF13 and having Live the PS3 has been selling better than the 360 since it launched and will soon pass it (GT5).

ummm it says shipped not sold tho

this is always going to be an unfair comparrison due to the fact that 75% of 3s**tty owners have purchased a second or third console due to that little red guy stopping in for a visit

i'm glad the ps3 is doing great and i always knew it would but this also shows how sad the sales are for ps3 games, only 3 millions less ps3s than xbox's yet xbox still sells a s**tload more games than the ps3 does. s**t, if u compare the 360 from a year or two ago to the ps3 now, i believe they would still be outselling sony. I guess i'm slightly more of a sony fanboy than a 360 one but i've always known that xbox had way more loyal consumers than the ps3, and thats including with all the modded xbox's that are out there, makes me smh but oh well.

its unfair because M$ can boast about selling X amount of units but if their console worked right in the first place the number would be substantially lower they would not have to ship so many units if so many units didnt break all the time and the sales wouldnt be so high if people were some what intelligent and stopped buying s**t that is guaranteed to break and need to be replaced

are people still really still arguing over who sold what between systems in 2010. I was in one of these threads when ps3 was still fresh and nothings changed. Console loyalty is so lame if a system has a game you want buy it who gives a s**t what it is.
