PlayStation 4 Won't Support 4K Games, 3D 'Not a Focus'

 PlayStation 4 Won't Support 4K Games, 3D 'Not a Focus'

Despite Sony's business-wide emphasis on 3D technology in the last two years, it chose to instead focus on 4K at CES this past January, making only brief mentions of the stereoscopic capabilities of its new products. Now, it seems that same philosophy is extending to the PlayStation 4. According to PlayStation Executive Shuhei Yoshida, the PlayStation 4 will support 4K video and photos, but 3D functionality will not be a focus.

"The PS4 supports 4K output, but only for photos and videos — not games," Yoshida said. "PS4 games do not work on 4K." While it's possible that we may see tech demos that demonstrate the system's capacity for 4K gaming, like Polyphony Digital's multi-display demos powered by several PS3s paired together, Yoshida says a single console cannot natively run games in the high-resolution format.

What's more, he said that stereoscopic 3D is not a focus for the new system, although it is 3D-capable.

"It's not a focus. But it does do it better. The basic capability is higher so more games will run at 1080p at 60 frames so it's an easier and better experience when you watch on 3D TV."

He went on to provide background about Sony's new strategy when it comes to 3D.

"3D was a big thing a couple of years ago — we made it a big thing because it was lead by the consumer electronics side of Sony and we liked what we could do on PS3 using 3D stereoscopic," Yoshida said. "But now the consumer electronics side of Sony, or all of the companies have shifted focus from 3D TV to something else, so if they're not talking about it, why would we?"

Yeah, but give it five years and most of us will own a 4K TV. 5 years from now is smack dab in the middle of the PS4's 10 year life cycle.

Bull!!. 4K is a gimmick like 3D. In 5 years about 5-10% of gamers will have 4K tv's. The human eye can't even distinguish between 1080p and 4k until you get into the 50 inch range, most people are too cheap to even buy 50+ inch 1080p sets. Just becuase people like us will buy 4k doesn't mean it will be widely adapted. Most people will just be confused by it. IMO they are !!ing themselves over by rushing 4K. People are just getting use to blu-rays. Rushing 4K so quick will only turn consumers off to the standard. They should have held off for at the very least 10 more years.

as long as i know 3D is still in tact, im a happy camper. devs will use this feature if they feel it makes a significant difference. (looking at you k!llzone shadow fall) i knew i wasn't jumping into 4k no time soon, and the system wont support 4k gaming so i really have no interest in 4k what so ever.

If 4K ever became popular enough to warrant its use in the PS4 then they will simply include it in a revision.

Seeing how miniscule the difference is for average customers I dont see that as being necessary

Honestly when I go over cats house and see them still connecting their console with composite cables, I can understand why Sony could get away with skipping 3D and 4K. Seems like Sony learned last generation that folks refuse to pay the extra that it takes to put higher end specs on a console. I remember almost nobody had a PS3 until the price dropped, folks were saying Xbox is the best, soon as the price dropped PS3 was all of a sudden the best cuz cats could afford it.[pic]

this is an idiotic statement. Clearer, sharper images is a gimmick like 3D? You must be joking.

Nothing is exported out in 4K resolution, so how would anyone be able to see a difference ever right now anyway? When TV and movies are exported out at this size you'll see the difference EASILY, but then again we'll need a new media format or quad layered blu-rays to even have movies at that res.

Right now we're basically at 2K with 1080P (1920x1080)

During the life of this system "2017-2019" 4k might be affordable by that time sony can sheep enough of people into buying a new ps4 that has 4k support and people will rebuy it. I don't know if you remember, but the first xbox 360 didn't have hdmi ports [pic]
