but you can have those features that they took out. just buy an older model ps3 and don't update it. you can have your ps3, which you own, exactly the way you want it, but you won't be able to use psn, which sony owns.
me personally, i don't give a !! because i bought a slim model after they removed all of that other bull!! so i don't miss it, because i didn't buy a ps3 to play ps2 games or use some other os. i bought it to play ps3 games, which it does perfectly fine.
and if all goes wrong, i still got a 360.
