Jack Tretton on the PlayStation 4 Possibly Being $599 at Launch: “I Certainly Hope Not”

While Sony announced a ton of news about the PlayStation 4 yesterday – Gaikai functionality, games, the specs – there were still some questions left unanswered such as the price, release date and what the console actually looks like.

All Things D talked to Jack Tretton, President and CEO of SCEA, about whether the PlayStation 4 will be $599 at launch:


		"I certainly hope not. I think we’re very proud of what we delivered with the PlayStation 3 in terms of technology, and that we were able to enhance the features while still reducing the price to $249. But I think our goal with this is to debut at a more consumer-friendly price. But we haven’t made any final decisions about what the price will be at launch."

Though not a completely huge deal, the lack of a physical PlayStation 4 box was a bit disappointing yesterday during the meeting, something which Jack addressed:


		"I guess when I think about the console, you open it up, you look at it, you certainly look at it when you insert a disc, but for most people, it’s behind a cabinet or on a shelf somewhere and you spend all your time looking at the screen. And we wanted to show people the screen. There will be multiple opportunities to share the look of the console between now and the launch. We just didn’t choose this first event as the time to show it."

He then continued by explaining if the system is ready:


		"I mean, we’re certainly capable of showing playable game content, but we don’t have a mass-production box that we can bring out and pull out. That’s still in development in terms of final specs and design."

That's if they go with two SKUs, but according to a high source; he's only seen one SKU.

I'm expecting $400 at launch.

Any more and it won't win the United States.

The lack of custom chips made the console really cheap to build. The one thing that has driven up the pricetag is the 8GB of GDDR5. That's bleeding edge !!.

Real !!, I had my ps3 since like 2008 and i got that YLOD in like 2010. I had the old model and that extended warranty they had for the old models had just ran out so I had to pay outta pocket to get the !! fixed. Of course I was livid, bc by that time they had the newer models that didnt have the same issue. I typed up an email expressing my issue and sent it Jack. Talked about how i didnt think it was fair I gotta pay for their mistake and Ive been a loyal PS customer since day one blah blah. I sent the same email every day for at least 2 weeks.

He finally responded and said he would have someone contact me about resolving my issue. Long story short I got a brand new ps3 and didnt have to pay !! for it.

8gddr5 ram is like 150$ dont know the price not gone guess but it will either be expensive or sony will sell at a big loss

the sweet spot would be 349-449. it has to compete in price with the Wii U.
