Help Needed- Which way should my XBox 360 sit?
topic by S-Dot - 01-14-2008, 08:30 AM - Boxden > BX GameSpot

Hey. I am wondering if someone can give me an official answer to this question. I have now gone through two XBox 360 systems with that red ####ing ring of de@th and I wondering if the way that I have my system set up is the reason why.

Which way was the XBox 360 intended to sit, horizontal or standing vertical?

I even called the ####ing XBox people and they didn't know they answer. If people could just let me know what they heard or what they do I would appreciate it.

Props for legit help.

I doubt there's a "specific" way the 360 should be sitting to prolong it's life.. if your 360 dies, it was going to die eventually regardless of which way it was sitting (horizontal or vertical)

Lay it horizontal. If you have it vertical there is a higher chance of the disc getting those perfect circle scratches and some of the ventilation is covered up when you have it vertical.

what are you talking about?

if you lay it down your covering 10 rows of holes for ventilation

Unless you lay it upside down and horizontal you're going to cover some ventilation. To me it makes more sense to lay it horizontal so you can avoid the scratching disc and the entire side (where you would be laying it down if vertical ) is all ventilation.

I've always gotten better performance when I sit my 360 horizontally. The disc sound isn't so loud as well.

yo its probably where u have the xbox not which way u lay it

1 is it in a ventilated area?
2 is it around a bunch of other devices that get hot?

i can leave my xbox on for over 12 hours and its still relatively cool but when i had it in my entertainment center OMG that #### got hot as hell so i took it out

lay it horizontally....but put it under two game cases

have the cases under the system where it doesnt block any ventilation shafts

this way the disks wont get scratched AND ull hav full air circulation

yeah always lay it horizontal...

and don't use a surge protector on your 360 either...it drains the life out of it in the long run (a customer support agent told me that on the phone 2 weeks ago smh)

I'm dealing with this issue right now too. 2 weeks ago i was standing my xbox and almost everytime I turned it on i got the RROD code 0022 which is overheating. At the 3rd try it finally decided to power up. So I put in a repair request then i started to lay it down. It would start up perfectly fine. I got the RROD 0022 again but I'm thinking that's because the vent in the back was being clogged up. I pulled it away from the wall and now it starts regular, no issues the past week. MS already shipped me my coffin and it's ready to go but I'm thinking that was just a minor issue and that i shouldn't waste 2 weeks without my xbox since it seems to be working fine now.

In other words, Lay it down

if your 360 is standing up, on, and falls down while you have a game in, say goodbye to that game.

cant happen like that if its always laying down, right?

and it doesnt matter how many holes of ventilation you have covered () its all about the air circulation in your room and how much cool air your 360 can get where its positioned. if your 360 is next to a dvd player, dvr box, cable box, all sorts of other electronics, yeah its gonna die because its not getting enough air. if the area is dusty, if your room is always hot, its gonna die.

yeah my 360 used to be on top of my surround sound reciever, and it always stayed on, so the bottom reciever would be hot as hell

My first 360 RROD and that one was stood vertical and my 2 other 360s were laid down horizontal and neither of them have had problems. But I doubt my first 360's RROD was caused by it standing up.
