Games must achieve photorealism in order to open up new genres says 2K

Games must achieve photorealism in order to open up new genres says 2K
By Jesszman - 08-02-2012, 09:41 PM - Boxden > BX GameSpot

With Halo, Medal of Honor, Battlefield, Crysis, Call of Duty, and countless other shooters coming, the market is a bit inundated. Unique and genre-bending games like Journey, for example, aren't easy to come by, but in order for this industry to truly reach the next level and expand into new genres, pure photorealism is needed, argues 2K Games boss Christoph Hartmann.

Speaking in a soon-to-be-published interview with GamesIndustry International, Hartmann noted that the film industry still has an advantage over video games in the sense that movie directors can easily portray strong emotions, like sadness or love. Because that's difficult to do in games, many developers go back to the action and shooter games, which are safer bets.

"Recreating a Mission Impossible experience in gaming is easy; recreating emotions in Brokeback Mountain is going to be tough, or at least very sensitive in this country... it will be very hard to create very deep emotions like sadness or love, things that drive the movies," he said. "Until games are photorealistic, it'll be very hard to open up to new genres. We can really only focus on action and shooter titles; those are suitable for consoles now."

He continued, "To dramatically change the industry to where we can insert a whole range of emotions, I feel it will only happen when we reach the point that games are photorealistic; then we will have reached an endpoint and that might be the final console."

Stay tuned for the complete interview in which we discuss next-gen gaming, 2K's portfolio, Wii U, and building up talent in the organization.

I don't want games to achieve photorealism, quite frankly.

bull!!. theres games that can invoke an emotional response without ultra-realistic graphics. hes just using excuses for laziness and bad writing.

Nah. If they do that there wont be a reason to make videogame consoles anymore if they eventually make everything photorealistic. Even now i feel theres like there's only one more console generation left after this one.

Style, art direction, writers, actors, setting, and other factors are able to do this than just photo realism.

Like in Walking Dead...i love Clementine like she my own daughter. I care about the decision I make and try to do things that will benefit her.

That's not photo real graphics...that's the reasons I listed above.

If your a little kid [pic] Real talk tho, games like ico are more liable to produce an emotional response, not no damn 8/16 bit game. [pic]

I want photorealism in certain games like GTA, Halo, MGS, Condemed then you can feel that much more pain and sympathy for the character going thru whatever he/she's going thru.

so he gonna act like like games such as Heavy Rain, LA Noire, Uncharted etc. are not on realistic side, but then take a game like Journey, with no dialog, or heavy graphics and is one of the most beautiful gaming experiences one could play

Cool

a game can be photo-realistic and still suck. You can bring emotion into any game, but you have to tell the story in a way that's appealing to the gamer.

How does Christoph Hartmann of 2K Games think romance novels keep selling emotional experiences to women? Most of those books have approx. ONE PHOTO, the cover. Yet they feel attached to the characters in the book. On the flip side, I can watch a live-action movie and feel detached to all of the characters completely. So pretty much its all about the storytelling, not how real it looks.

Videogame genres can evolve based on capacity and how expansive a game can be. GTA except you can walk into any building and talk to anyone. COD/Battlefield except everything is destructible & interactive. Mass Effect except there's more than 4 or 5 slightly different endings, but having every player having an almost completely different experience start to finish based on their decisions. That's one thing that is untapped in videogames but very achievable with the right next-gen hardware.
