BF3 HD Install doesn't work on Xbox 360 Slims.

BF3 HD Install doesn't work on Xbox 360 Slims.
topic by Jesszman - 10-27-2011, 06:24 PM - Boxden > BX GameSpot

Wow. This we can barely believe. In fact if it hadn't happened to me personally, I probably wouldn't. It seems that if you're playing Battlefield 3 on one of the new-ish 4Gb slim Xbox 360s, unless ours is a freak isolated incident (and a couple of references I've found on forums imply that it certainly is not), you might well be stuck with crappy last-gen (or worse) textures throughout the game.

We knew that BF3 'recommends' an optional HD texture install on the 360, in order to allow the game to look, well, not ####. And I had wondered about the feasibility of that process for gamers with limited HD space. But while making a comparison video for tomorrow's review, I've just discovered that BF3 wouldn't install its HD textures on our 4Gb 360 at all. Seriously. It just wasn't having any of it. It seems that the game is seeing the 4Gb internal memory as a Memory Unit rather than a hard drive, and thus refuses to work with it. The problem? We currently suspect that it's due to the 4Gb in the Slim being onboard Flash memory rather than an actual hard drive. Scroll on for a procession of screenshots detailing what happened when I tried.

Above: Okay then...

Above: Hang on a minute, I thought...

Above: NOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Want to know how big a deal this is? Well here's the video I've just made. I was going to save it for tomorrow's mammoth Battlefield 3 review, but given the circumstances I thought I'd use it today. The first version of each shot is always the one with the HD textures installed, obviously.

The best bit about this? Play.com are currently bundling the 4Gb Xbox 360 Slim with a copy of Battlefield 3. Depending on how big a problem this turns out to be, it could be an interesting week on the customer service lines.

I've contacted EA for comment on this one. They're looking into it and have said they'll get back to me soon. I'll keep you posted.

Hang on, can you not just buy a 120gb xbox hdd for the 4gb slim?

How many times is this going to be discussed? It's been said in how many threads that the 4GB slim owners won't be able to install the texture pack. Most 4GB slim owners are casuals who use it for Kinect purposes.

You can use any old hard drive with the slim. Bought a 120 for $30 at GameStop and put it in my slim.

Well i understand that, but the way the article is written, it makes it look as if you can't just buy one of microsoft's 1st party slim hdd's and use it on the 4gb one to install the hd textures.

Jizzman, the 4GB Slim Xbox has internal memory only, there is no hard drive. There's an open slot to put a hard drive if you plan on doing that.

Because battlefield is a popular franchise doesn't matter if it won't be as big as mw3 or cod in general, most games aren't.
