Analyst: Wii U GameStop sales below expectations

Sterne Agee industry watcher says hardware and software sales for Nintendo's latest fall short during holiday period at speciality retailer.

Wii U hardware and software sales at GameStop during the holiday season were below expectations, according to an investor note from Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia. The industry watcher said Wii U availability at GameStop continues to be "abundant."


The Wii U made its worldwide debut November 18 in North America and sold 400,000 units during its first week. The console launched in Europe and Australia on November 30, but no specific sales figures for those regions have been announced. The Wii U's December 8 launch in Japan saw first-weekend sales come in at 308,570 units.

Bhatia also revealed that the $350 Wii U Deluxe model is selling at a greater clip than the $300 basic version at GameStop, presumably due to its "better value." The Deluxe model includes 32GB of storage space to the Basic unit's 8GB, as well as a bundled copy of Nintendo Land.

Additionally, Bhatia said the Wii U software attach rate at GameStop is "low," but did not provide a specific rate.

"Our conclusion is the Nintendo Wii U launch has been slightly disappointing," Bhatia said.

Well if Nintendo isn't dissappointed (reports seem that they are good with sales) then it doesn't matter what Analysts think to be honest

gamestop had a terrible process tho with the whole pre ordering thing and not allowing people to pre order and being on a waiting list.... yet they didnt call people on the waiting list.

they were forced to cancel the waiting list.

The best buy around my way had over 80 deluxe in stock during the holidays. That was more than their ps3s and Xbox combined lol

Nobody wants the white one. When i was talking to the dude in Gamestop and from everything else i can see in other stores, the white one doesnt sell. And most places cant stock the black one fast enough. Sales arent gonna be what they want cuz they only selling have the units. The probably expected that cheap one to sell better.

I stopped buying !! from crapstop when I went in there to buy I believe gears 2 NEW. When homie pulled out a cd sleeve with gears 2 in it then got a case from underneath the desk I stopped him. I said new, not used.

He said it is new, we have to take all games out of the shrinkwrap and blah blah. I told him that aint new then, and left.

So then you should've asked for a sealed copy.

new and sealed are the same thing homeboy... the fact is.. if u bring in a game to trade in and tell them its new but u got the game in a cd sleve with the case on the side they are going to tell you that your !! is used... do not let them mistreat you this way please...


go google gamestop employees checkout system... they let the employees take a copy home for a few days to see if they like it... if the !! is opened the !! is used.... so tell them u are willing to pay the used price for it... then at the end of the day its only 5 dollars cheaper used but u gotta pay $10 for the online pass so in the end ur paying

It really doesn't matter to me. If I want it sealed, i'll ask for it sealed, otherwise i'll take the opened copy.

my point is this... u buy the opened copy........ say u get home and ur system somehow broke... so u cant get it to turn on


so u take the opened copy back to gamestop... is your game new or used to them?

they will tell you your !! is used... the same exact "unplayed" copy they just sold you




either way..... i buy my new games from gamestop... i just never trade them in and i always get a sealed copy so i can make sure any DLC codes are in tact... i also bought a power up rewards pro from them for $15 or something because they hassled me every !!ing time i came in the store to look at a box.. times i used my pro card .. 0
