Roy Jones, Jr., and Anthony Hanshaw joined promoter Murad Muhammad Wednesday at Madison Square Garden, for the New York City announcement of their July 14 Pay-Per-View bout at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum and Convention Center.
Recalling how the fight was originally set for Hurricane Katrina-ravaged New Orleans, Muhammad stated, "Because of the tragedy, we thought that we should be in New Orleans," but added, "The date did not coincide with the arena."
John Lucas, President of IP Casino and Resort, said of the card, "A more appropriate name for this fight is, "We're Back," not just Roy. Boxing is all about comebacks, and so is the Gulf Coast at this point... we want to tell everybody in this country, we're back and open for business."
Trainer Lou Duva predicted, "This is a match. Remember one thing as the fight goes along. Fighters don't make the fight, styles make the fight. Anthony has got a style that's going to give Roy Jones hell out there." Duva then said of Jones, "This is the guy that kept boxing alive."
Comedian and boxing fan Pat Cooper was in attendance and was making eyes at Bronx lightweight Maureen Shea, who Muhammad said could be on the show. Cooper said of Shea, "I was going to ask that lady out to dinner, but then they told me she's a fighter, so I'm gonna eat alone tonight."
Cooper continued, "I wish I had the courage to get into a ring. The first time I put on gloves, my mother gave them to me, it was cold out."
Anthony "The Tyger" Hanshaw, a native of Ohio is undefeated in 21 pro bouts. Hanshaw stated, "July 14. That is my time. Roy Jones had his time. But, on July 14, that is my time to shine." Hanshaw then announced he is no longer with trainer John Russell and will now be trained by Floyd Mayweather, Sr.
Jones then took to the microphone and stated, "I love to do what I do and I am back to doing what I do. No one can dictate to me because, when I go in that ring, it is my life that is on the line... Why would I want to fight someone who is not a threat?"
Jones added, "I'm not here to fool myself. He is young, up-and-coming and he's hungry."
Hanshaw was not Jones' first choice, but Glen Johnson was under contractual obligations, talks fell through with Frank Warren for Joe Calzaghe and Jermain Taylor would not be ready until September,
Jones explained. "The only guy that stepped up to the plate, that has the ability... was Anthony Hanshaw.."
Roy Jones (50-4, 38 KO's) vs. Anthony Hanshaw (21-0-1, 14 KO's) billed, "He's Back! Witness The Return of a King", will be held on Saturday, July 14 at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum and Convention Center and televised over Multi-Vision Pay Per View for $29.95.
