Potential owners of MLB 07: The Show for PlayStation 3 will empathize with Yankees owner George Steinbrenner, for you will know the experience of paying a hefty price for an underachieving franchise.
The Show offers some great elements, like its player career mode, but the PS3 version gives no justification to forgo the less visually appealing but more affordable edition on predecessor PlayStation 2.

Both versions of The Show are nearly identical, with the exception of graphics. The gap between the two, however, is not very wide.

Visually, the PlayStation 3 presents a sharper look in comparison. Facial details on players are easier to distinguish, and stadium elements look crisp. When lined up with other next-gen sports titles, The Show looks like a highly-polished PS2 title. Little wrinkles like player expressions and natural-moving uniforms that add to a sports title's authenticity are lacking.

That aside, The Show is still a decent baseball franchise. The standard bells and whistles of most baseball simulations are found here: franchise and manager modes, create-a-player and online mode.

The best feature is Road to the Show, where you take a young player and advance him through the minor leagues on his way to the majors. After creating a player from scratch and selecting a team, you'll play a month of spring training games with the major league franchise. Your performance will determine what level your player starts out.

Games in Show mode are pretty quick. Instead of playing an entire game, you'll only control the situations your player is in. For example, I opted to play as a second baseman. The only time I would participate is during my player's at-bats or when a ball was hit my way in the field.

Before each appearance, you receive an objective for your next opportunity, whether it's to get an out on the field or drive in runs at the plate. Every goal accomplished is rewarded with points toward training.

It's a refreshing take on baseball simulations, and makes slogging through a long season easier. You can also control plenty of off-field activities as well, like lobbying your manager for a position change or more playing time.

As for standard baseball games, the controls are solid but seem a step behind. Batting is still handled via timed button presses, one for a contact swing and one for a power swing. The mechanisms for guessing pitches and locations at the plate make stands in the batter's box slightly interesting.

Pitching is pretty simple: Select your pitch, position the ball where you want to throw, then a pair of timed presses to determine power and accuracy. Overall, controls aren't innovative.

As a baseball title, MLB '07: The Show, is a solid and has a wide array of choices. As a PS3 title, The Show whiffs badly. You're better off saving that $20 and purchasing the equally satisfying PlayStation 2 edition.
