arise on his tightened skin
enters the alcove
trying to escape
reaching for his wallet
to identify himself
or maybe to surrender it
plainclothes officers see an unlikely mirage
a square billfold that looks like a firearm
forty-one bullets, loud missiles in a quiet war
nineteen true to their intended target
