blunted and southside... let me explain my reasoning

you guys play the bucs (loss)
they play the jets (win)

you guys play the jets (win)
they play the titans (win)

and then you guys play eachother (close game)

as you can see, the dolphins have a PERFECTLY reasonable chance to take the number one spot, i know they're your team but yall gotta quit acting like stans for a second.

as a giants fan, i know the cowboys are closely biting at our heels

the pats are far too weak due to their injuries this season they will not make the bowl the colts have it sewn up unless peyton dies of a std or sumthing

u say we win against the jets so thats it then... if we win one more game we clinch the divison or if miami loses a game we clinch the divison...so the only way miami makes the playoffs is if they win the rest of there games and new england loses the rest of there games...

yall wont believe that your era is over until some 4th, 5th seed team wipes the floor with yall in the playoffs... or yall miss the playoffs in 1-2years

do you honestly believe that the bills, jets, and dolphins will continue to suck for the next 5 years...

the patriots will sink in that division... eventually

this year really showed teams why its important to NOT GET COMFORTABLE.. you want reasons?!?!

1. rams
2. falcons
3. eagles
4. vikings
5. steelers

not to mention all the wildcard teams that will be staying at home this season...

eventually, teams get better... the dolphins, jets, and bills WILL GET BETTER.. and eventually, be better than the patriots

IM NOT A DOLPHINS FAN... im just stating the facts... the afc east is gonna be fierce in the future.. and the patriots will have to fight to win their divison every year...

THINK ABOUT IT.. the DOLPHINS HAD NO OFFENSIVE IDENTITY or team spirit for most of the season and they fu*ked around and won 8 games this year... THE PATRIOTS ARE LAST YEARS CHAMPS AND EVENTUALLY GOT TO 10 WINS.. 5 of them from the afc east..

First off, the Fish won 9 games this year...

Second, I agreed with you. They are gonna be nice in the upcomming years. Their defense had the most sacks this year. Their running game is vicous and their coach knows what he's doing!

Third, be real, we had the hardest schedule this year! That's what happens when you're reigning super bowl champions. Next year, we might fu*k around and go 16-0 with a healthy defense.

Maroon_Tiger
01-01-2006, 09:09 PM
yall didnt have a hard schedule...

the broncos, chargers, raider, and chiefs had it harder..

thats just for starters...

the patriots 2nd half schedule {minus the kc game} was basically a preseason schedule

Speaking of the Dolphins. We beat the Dolphins earlier this year with our team depleted. Then we almost beat you with our second stringers. C'mon. Williams is gone next year. Who yall got at QB? Yeah that's what I thought. We have our battles, but who is in the playoffs and who isn't? And I don't want to hear any excuses because we had so many injuries this year it was crazy and we still got to the playoffs. Go Patriots. Nobody wants to see us in the playoffs we're trouble...

Man I hope the Jags pull this sh*t off. That sh*t Brady said the other day was on some uber-homo sh*t. I like him a lot but that was garbage. If anybody should feel disrespected it's the Jags for having the Pats lay down like dirty drawer wearing hoes against Miami so they wouldn't have to play Pittsburgh. I'm not saying I think the Jags will win because I don't think they will but if they play like they're capable of and keep that bi*ch sh*t that NE pulled in the back of their heads all game they just may upset these bastards. I like Brady and all but fu*k his team, it would be great to see the Jags take a nice sh*t on their faces.

Winter wonderings

By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff | February 14, 2006

There is a lot of personnel talk in this month's mailbag. Between the draft and free agency, fans are wondering which players the Patriots might target. Also, fans want to know which players might depart the Patriots in free agency.
Article Tools

Talks are quiet on a contract for receiver David Givens, according to Givens's agent, Brad Blank. Kicker Adam Vinatieri, offensive guard Stephen Neal, defensive back Artrell Hawkins and offensive tackle Tom Ashworth are other players scheduled for unrestricted free agency.

The team got a jump on free agency by signing linebacker/safety Don Davis to a one-year extension last week. Davis led the Patriots with 25 special teams tackles in 2005.

Free agency begins March 3. Teams can choose to assign a franchise tag or transition tag on prospective unrestricted free agents until Feb. 23.

Two players who I'm projecting will interest the Patriots in free agency are receiver Brian Finneran (Falcons) and -- like e-mailer Tony Amero of Susanville, Calif., suggested -- safety Adam Archuleta (Rams). I've been a fan of the 30-year-old Finneran (6-foot-5, 217 pounds) since he came out of Villanova and have followed his career closely. According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, Finneran earned an incentive in his contract that voided the final year of his deal and makes him a free agent. He had 50 catches with the Falcons in 2005, just five fewer than Joe Jurevicius had with the Seahawks. Don't know as much about Archuleta but think a hard-hitting safety with some experience would be a nice addition in case Rodney Harrison isn't ready by opening day.

Pats not playing tag
by Paul Perillo, Patriots Football Weekly

The 4 p.m. deadline came and went Thursday afternoon and the Patriots chose not use their franchise or transition designations on anyone. That decision means, barring some last minute negotiations, that Adam Vinatieri, David Givens, Stephen Neal and the rest of the team’s 16 unrestricted free agents will hit the open market when free agency begins March 3 at the start of the new league year.

The 4 p.m. deadline came and went Thursday afternoon and the Patriots chose not use their franchise or transition designations on anyone. That decision means, barring some last minute negotiations, that Adam Vinatieri, David Givens, Stephen Neal and the rest of the team’s 16 unrestricted free agents will hit the open market when free agency begins March 3 at the start of the new league year.

Vinatieri was tagged with the franchise label last season and earned $2.51 million in 2005. As the highest paid player at his position, the 33-year-old kicker would have earned roughly $3.01 million (which is 120 percent of his previous salary) this season if New England tagged him again.

Evidently Bill Belichick and Scott Pioli felt that was too steep a price to pay for a kicker, even one as valuable as Vinatieri. With the pending labor agreement still not resolved, there has been speculation that teams will be less likely to use the tags in 2006 with cash and cap concerns weighing heavily into those decisions. As of Thursday afternoon, only three players – the Jets John Abraham, the Lions Jeff Backus and Buffalo’s Nate Clements – had been slapped with the franchise tag.

The labor problems also could lead to a delay in the start of free agency. Several reports have indicated that if a new collective bargaining agreement is close, the sides may opt to push back the start of the league year to complete it while also getting all parties concerned up to speed on any new aspects that would be imperative in future negotiations.

Franchise players earn the average of the top five players at their respective positions, or 120 percent of their previous salary, whichever is greater. An opposing team that signs a franchise player has to surrender a pair of first-round picks as compensation, plus the original team has the right to match the offer.

Transition players receive the average of the top 10 players at their respective positions. Like with franchise players, their old team has a right of first refusal but the difference is there is no compensation if the team chooses not to match any deal.

The agreement for both is for one year with no signing bonus, which is the main reason why players don’t necessarily like the arrangement. But for a player like Vinatieri, who as a kicker doesn’t run nearly the same risk of being injured as positional players, or have the cache of commanding an eight-figure signing bonus on the open market, the scenario has been beneficial.

He was tagged briefly in 2002 before he agreed to a three-year deal less than a month later. He was tagged again last year and became the first player in team history to play under the designation. By comparison, Arizona’s Neil Rackers, the next highest-paid kicker according to the NFLPA website, signed a four-year, $6.4 million extension last November with a $3 million signing bonus. Had Vinatieri been franchised again he would have earned more than $5.5 million from 2005-06 in half the time it will take Rackers to make his $6.4 million.

Vinatieri indicated during the season that there had been little progress made toward reaching a long-term agreement that would allow him to likely end his career in New England. With the safety of the franchise tag no longer present, perhaps the incentive to get a deal completed now exists.

Givens, 25, is set to enter free agency for the first time. He has firmly entrenched himself as a solid receiver, likely in the No. 2 mold. He caught a career-high 59 passes for 738 yards and a pair of touchdowns in 2005 and could draw some attention in rather weak corps of free agent receivers that was depleted even further by Indianapolis’ re-signing of Reggie Wayne on Wednesday.

Neal also could generate interest on the open market after starting every game at right guard for the Patriots last season. His athletic, powerful style could be attractive to a team looking for help up front.

Despite the risk of losing either player, the franchise numbers are simply too steep to be legitimate options. Wide receivers will earn $6.172 million (franchise) and $5.160 million (transition) in 2006. Because offensive linemen are considered the same regardless of position, and left tackles command much higher salaries than guards, the numbers for Neal also would be out of range at $6.983 million and $6.391 million, respectively.

Other Patriots set to hit the market on March 3 include: tackle Tom Ashworth, wide receivers Troy Brown, Andre’ Davis and Tim Dwight, linebacker Matt Chatham, running back Heath Evans, tight end Christian Fauria, quarterback Doug Flutie, defensive backs Artrell Hawkins, Hank Poteat, Chad Scott and Michael Stone and offensive lineman Ross Tucker.

Vinatieri really didn't deserve the franchise tag this year. His kicking was just so so and the missed kick in the Broncos game really didn't help things. I think he will be signed. Jervicious would fit our team the best. He's a great team player and a great all around guy. I know Tom Ashworth and Stephen Neal will be resigned. Fauria has been pretty useless. Davis turned it on at the end of the year, he's a great deep threat. I hope to god they resign Troy Brown, he is one of my favorite players, but I think because of his age they might not. I think Flutie will retire. Tim Dwight was great on special teams and caught some deep balls, but he had a problem catching this year, so he might not get resigned...

John Tomase of the Boston Herald writes that Adam Vinatieri has reportedly turned down an offer from the Patriots for what sources are saying was a multiyear contract worth more than $2 million annually that would keep him the highest-paid kicker in the game. Tomase reports that a source close to Vinatieri said he wants to let the market determine his value, "like at an auction."

McGinest prepared to get sacked
http://cache.boston.com/bonzai-fba/Globe_Photo/2006/03/03/1141391758_8824-1.jpg
‘‘I understand the business part of it,’’ says Willie McGinest, expected to be a salary cap victim. (Globe File Photo / Jim Davis)

By Ron Borges, Globe Staff | March 3, 2006

Willie McGinest is a realist, which means he knows the ax is coming. He understands the situation he's in and the business he's in, which isn't the same as liking either. Rather, it's the mature reaction to the uncontrollable circumstances McGinest finds himself in at the advanced age (by NFL standards) of 34.

McGinest has been a stalwart on the Patriots' three Super Bowl championship teams, elevating his play at an age when most of his peers begin to diminish. Last season, his play got stronger as the season progressed, culminating with a playoff-record 4 1/2-sack game against Jacksonville. But he likely will be among hundreds of veterans released by their teams.

Although McGinest received a 72-hour reprieve when the Players Association and NFL management agreed to delay the start of free agency until Sunday night, in the hope of hammering out an extension of the collective bargaining agreement, he and many others might become victims of a tight-fitting salary cap.

''We didn't think they were ever going to pay me $7 million or $8 million next year," McGinest said from his home in Los Angeles. ''This last year [2006] was a ghost deal. It wasn't meant to stick. That's why we escalated the numbers the way we did. It would be great if they exercised it and gave me $7 million or $8 million, but I knew if it came to it, they'd renegotiate, release me, or release me and then do a new contract."

Before delaying the free agency period, yesterday's unanimous vote by owners to reject the Players Association's final offer to extend the CBA left franchises up against difficult economic circumstances until well past an 11th-hour reprieve, which was seven hours after the owners rejected the union's proposal. With free agency scheduled to begin at midnight last night, teams had to be under what will be roughly a $94 million cap. For many to get there, heads had to roll and some did before the sides delayed for three more days. If positions harden again, McGinest understands his fate.

''I want to retire in New England," McGinest said. ''I'm hoping and wishing they do what's best for our team and secure the players we need to win another championship. I think I'd be part of that. I think I'm still a top-level type guy with a lot left in the tank. I'm pretty sure everyone knows where my heart is but I understand the business part of it, too."

His heart is in New England, but if McGinest's body gets on the open market, he will find many suitors, according to NFL sources, and he will have a hard business decision to make. The Browns, Cowboys, Chiefs, Chargers, Dolphins, and Jets are interested in him. Some, like the Jets and Chiefs, have cap problems, but others, like the Chargers and Browns, will have money to spend because they are well below the current $94 million cap, which could drive up McGinest's price even in a difficult market, and drive him out of New England.

Willie McGinest is a realist, which means he knows the ax is coming. He understands the situation he's in and the business he's in, which isn't the same as liking either. That doesn't mean McGinest will not return to Foxborough next season, but it does mean he might be faced with a choice he never wanted to make.

''Your play speaks for itself," said McGinest, who passed Bruce Smith and Reggie White to become the NFL's all-time postseason sacks leader with 16 in 18 games. ''Everybody knows what I bring to the table and how hard I work, and I know what the Patriots bring me to elevate my game. They put me in certain schemes to excel.

''But I understood with the cap number I have I'd probably get unloaded. I'm not worried about it. That's what I pay [agent] Gary [Uberstine] for. When it's time to talk business, we'll converse and make our decision. Until then, I'll wait for the next move from them.

''I've been blessed to do the two things you hope to accomplish in professional football -- make a lot of money and win a lot of Super Bowls. I've been with a great organization, playing with great players in a great city. We built some sports history there. I'm not saying I'm content [to leave] but I'm relaxed. I'm confident something will happen for me because I'm not looking for something crazy, like a first-rounder coming in. I just figure they'll try and do the right thing.

''Either way, whether I get to stay or I have to go, I can't ever be bitter with any decision the Patriots make. Mr. Kraft brought me in and I've been treated well. I've been able to make a name for myself and propel myself into the business world. They've given me 12 good years, so I've got to respect their business decision, whatever it is."

Willie McGinest doesn't want anyone to be confused about his point. He wants to finish his career as a Patriot. He was not happy with the way last season ended (with a playoff loss in Denver) and he wants to be part of changing that outcome one more time. But if the ax must be wielded and he is a victim this time, he understands it's not personal. It's business. The business he chose. The football business. A business he believes he'll still be in next fall. He just doesn't know where.

McGinest unfazed by harsh reality of NFL
http://espn-att.starwave.com/media/nfl/2006/0313/photo/a_mcginest_412.jpg

There isn't so much as a hint of bitterness in Willie McGinest's voice as he discusses his divorce from the New England Patriots after 12 seasons, three Super Bowl victories and a pair of Pro Bowl appearances. If anything, in fact, the veteran outside linebacker sounds downright enthusiastic about embarking on a second chapter of his NFL career, even pumped up by the prospect of what lies ahead for him.

And as he begins making visits this week to several of the many suitors that have contacted agent Gary Uberstine in the wake of his release, McGinest is eager to let teams know that, although he navigates the free-agent path for the first time, he'll be looking more through the windshield than at the rearview mirror.

It has been more than a week since the Patriots released McGinest to avoid paying him a $3.5 million roster bonus due this month. And although his celebrated tenure in New England never will be expunged from McGinest's personal memory bank, the Patriots certainly are beginning to fade into the horizon.

"Given what they did for me as a player and a person, I can't be bitter, and I actually owe them a great deal, certainly," said McGinest, in a weekend interview that marked his longest discussion of his unemployment. "But at the end of the day, they're the ones who put me out into free agency, right? I'll never close the door [on going back to New England]. But since they cut me, they haven't called at all to see how we might be able to [construct] a contract to bring me back, and I don't see it happening. So it looks like they're moving ahead without me. And I'm moving forward, too."

If the notion of McGinest's donning a different team's uniform in 2006 seems, well, un-Patriotic to the fans in New England, it isn't nearly as unfathomable to the veteran linebacker.

More than two weeks before McGinest's release, ESPN.com suggested in a "Tip Sheet" item that the universally respected McGinest might not be quite so indispensable to the Patriots because of the roster bonus and a prohibitive salary cap charge. Even before that, McGinest understood that his long and productive tenure with the only NFL team for which he ever played might end.

In truth, the 2006 segment of McGinest's contract always was viewed by him and the team as a so-called "dummy" year. It was an extension season added during a previous contract restructuring to help the Pats maneuver under the salary cap. But just because McGinest knew that he would never play under the terms of that restructuring, and that another readjustment would be necessary, doesn't mean he felt he wouldn't play at all for New England in 2006.

As last season wore on, though, the Patriots never began substantive talks at reworking the 2006 season, which also included a $3.5 million base salary. And when there were no such overtures, McGinest said Saturday, he didn't need a translator to help him decipher the handwriting on the wall.

McGinest, 34, has grown increasingly pragmatic during his career. He has watched teammates come and go in the free agency and salary cap era. He knew when New England released wide receiver Troy Brown last spring, rather than pay a $2.5 roster bonus, that there were no untouchables. The Patriots subsequently re-signed Brown to a one-year contract, but that might not happen for McGinest, who is ready to begin seeking out a new address and eager for a new challenge.

The official spin from the Patriots is that the team released McGinest when it did, before the start of the league year and free agency, out of respect for him. By doing so, management publicly emphasized, it provided McGinest a head start on the rest of the market. Given the respect the Patriots always have demonstrated toward their elder statesman, there probably is considerable truth to that rationalization.

But team president and vice chairman Jonathan Kraft, in acknowledging that McGinest embodied the essence of what the once-moribund franchise has become under the superb stewardship of the Kraft family, said in a Boston area radio interview: "It would be a really cool ending for him to retire as a Patriot. But it's a business."

A guy whose savvy extends well beyond the playing field, McGinest certainly understands that chillingly bottom line reality. So, now that the dust has settled and there has been no communication with the Patriots about a possible rapprochement, he's ready to get on with his business.

"There are a lot of great memories from all those seasons in New England," McGinest said, "but they're called memories for a reason. I've still got some history to go out and make."

His history with the Patriots has been an impressive one. At a recent charity event, fans and former Patriots teammates beseeched McGinest not to leave, a decision that requires bilateral action. One former teammate termed him "an icon," McGinest recalled Saturday, saying he was "really touched" by the assessment of his New England tenure and what he has meant to the franchise.

People forget that early in McGinest's career -- before Tom Brady and Richard Seymour and Adam Vinatieri -- he was a stalwart performer on a team that wasn't always good. In McGinest's first seven seasons, the Pats earned three playoff berths and won two division titles, but they also had four non-playoff years, including a pair of losing campaigns and one last-place finish.

The team's first-round choice in the 1994 draft -- after an All-American career at Southern California, to which he remains fiercely loyal -- McGinest has appeared in 171 regular-season games and 18 postseason contests. He has 701 tackles and 78 sacks (the most sacks of any defender in free agency) and 14 forced fumbles. His league-best 4½ sacks in this year's playoffs pushed his postseason total to 16. One can surmise that the teams that have contacted his agent, beginning the wooing process, watched tape of McGinest's dominating performance (eight tackles, 4½ sacks) in a wild-card win over Jacksonville.

Said the defensive coordinator from one NFC team expected to pursue McGinest: "There's something left in the tank. And, given his pride, what happened to him with [being released] will just motivate him that much more. But, yeah, we think he can still be a factor for a few more years."

McGinest said that, in assessing his suitors, he won't necessarily limit his options to playoff teams. Claiming three Super Bowl rings in a four-season span was nice, but the feat hasn't jaded McGinest, and he also will consider as possible landing spots teams he believes are poised to make a great leap forward, situations where he can provide some impetus for improvement.

Nor will he reduce his options to teams that play a 3-4 defensive front. Although he has reached a comfort level in that defense, and essentially defined himself as a hybrid edge player, McGinest still feels he can jam receivers at the line of scrimmage, drop into the flat and cover, and play stout versus the run. He will want to discuss, in detail, his role with any team that pursues him in free agency. Part of the role he will accentuate is that of leader, locker room presence and, if needed, tutor for younger players.

"That's part of what excites me, really, is the chance to maybe help a team and help other players achieve some of their goals," McGinest said. "You name it, and I've pretty much been there and done that. At this point in my career, the individual [accomplishments] aren't as important, not anymore. I'm developed. I'm primed. I'm a team guy who knows his role. If that role is with a new team, well, so be it."

Patriots Release LB Chad Brown and Ryan Krug

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Patriots released linebacker Chad Brown and offensive guard Ryan Krug today.

Brown, 35, is a three-time Pro Bowler who has spent a total of 13 seasons with three different teams: Pittsburgh (1993-96), Seattle (1997-2004) and New England (2005). The 6-foot-2-inch, 245-pound linebacker was signed by the Patriots as an unrestricted free agent on May 10, 2005. Last season, he ranked 10th on the team with 54 tackles (35 solo), and also forced three fumbles while playing in 15 games with five starts. In his career, he has played in 178 games with 161 starts and recorded 1,097 tackles (813 solo), 78.0 sacks, six interceptions, 43 passes defensed, 19 forced fumbles and 18 fumble recoveries. The former University of Colorado standout was selected to the Pro Bowl following the 1996, 1998 and 1999 seasons. The Altadena, Calif., native was originally drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the second round (44th overall) of the 1993 NFL Draft. As a rookie, he earned First Team All-Rookie honors from Pro Football Weekly, Pro Football News and the PFWA. By his second season in the league, he had become one of the Steelers’ most productive defensive players, starting all 16 games at linebacker and pacing the team with 119 tackles in 1994. Two years later, he earned his first trip to the Pro Bowl after recording 13.0 sacks for Pittsburgh in 1996, a season in which he was named First Team All-NFL by the Associated Press, Sports Illustrated and Pro Football Weekly, among other publications. Brown joined the Seahawks as an unrestricted free agent prior to the 1997 season and led Seattle with 104 tackles in his first season in the Pacific Northwest. He then posted back-to-back Pro Bowl campaigns in 1998 and 1999, leading the team in tackles each season. In 1998, he earned First-Team All-Pro honors from a variety of publications and was named Seahawks MVP by his teammates. Brown averaged 100 tackles per season in 2000 and 2001, starting all 16 games in each campaign. During his eight-year stint with the Seahawks from 1997-2004, Brown averaged 93 tackles per season and had more tackles (744) than any other Seattle player over that span.

Krug, 23, was originally signed by the Patriots as an undrafted free agent on April 29, 2005, and has not played in any NFL games. The 6-foot-4-inch, 304-pound offensive lineman was released by New England on Aug. 30, 2005. The former University of Connecticut standout had three stints on the Patriots practice squad during the 2005 season: joining the squad on Sept. 4 before being released on Sept. 8, rejoining the squad on Sept. 28 before being released on Dec. 13, then rejoining the squad on Dec. 30 and remaining with the practice squad through the end of the season. He was signed to the active roster from the practice squad on Jan. 30, 2006.

McGinest to visit Browns, old coach Crennel
By Len Pasquarelli
ESPN.com

In looking for a new home, Willie McGinest will start by meeting with an old friend.

The linebacker, released last week for salary cap reasons after 12 years with the New England Patriots, will visit on Tuesday with Cleveland Browns coaches and club officials. The Browns' second-year head coach is Romeo Crennel, who was a New England assistant for seven years of McGinest's long tenure with the Pats.

Several other teams have contacted agent Gary Uberstine to inquire about McGinest, but it is not known with how many more of them the veteran linebacker will meet. It is certainly no coincidence, though, that his initial trip is to Cleveland, a team that has been among the NFL's most aggressive in the opening days of the free agency period.

Beyond the presence of Crennel, who was a defensive line coach (1993-96) and coordinator (2001-2004) for the Patriots, the Browns play a 3-4 defense, an alignment in which McGinest has enjoyed great success. McGinest told ESPN.com over the weekend that, while he is confident he could play in a 4-3 front, he is most comfortable as a 3-4 outside linebacker.

The Browns, who have added five veterans since Saturday, including nose tackle Ted Washington on the defensive side, still have sufficient salary cap room and financial wherewithal to craft a contract proposal that might interest McGinest, who was scheduled to make $7 million in 2006 between his base salary and a roster bonus. And the Browns, who have posted just one winning season since returning to the league in 1999, and who were 6-10 under Crennel in 2005, certainly present the kind of challenge that McGinest seems to be seeking at this late juncture of his career.

"That's part of what excites me, really, is the chance to maybe help a team and help other players achieve some of their goals," McGinest said Saturday. "You name it and I've pretty much been there and done that. At this point in my career, the individual [accomplishments] aren't as important, not any more. I'm developed. I'm primed. I'm a team guy who knows his role. If that role is with a new team, well, so be it."

McGinest, 34, has 78 career sacks and his six sacks in 2005 were one more than any Cleveland player managed in Crennel's first season.

As a team, the Browns registered just 23 sacks, the fewest in the NFL. Crennel and general manager Phil Savage have publicly reiterated the need to improve the Cleveland pass rush.

In addition to the meeting with McGinest, the Browns have been negotiating with unrestricted free agent Kalimba Edwards, a defensive end with the Detroit Lions who would likely move to linebacker in a 3-4 scheme.

Givens, Titans talk
http://cache.boston.com/bonzai-fba/Globe_Photo/2006/03/14/1142342128_6891.jpg

David Givens spent last night in Nashville, pondering his NFL future, as the Titans put a $24 million offer on the table attempting to persuade the Patriots' free agent wideout to make Tennessee his home for the next five years.

According to the Houston Chronicle, the Texans, whom Givens visited Sunday, were some $5.5 million behind the Titans' offer. Miami, which hosted Givens Saturday, the first day of the free agent signing period, had yet to make a serious offer. The Patriots apparently are waiting to see what Givens's best offer is before making a counter.

Givens spent time at the Titans' facility yesterday, even submitting to a physical, and was slated to tour the city last night. While the extended stay in the Music City would seem to indicate a lean toward signing with the Titans, Givens's agent, Brad Blank, said a decision has yet to be made.

''I think it's a good idea to spend time there, a place he has never really been, to see the city before deciding if that is where he wants to live," Blank said.

Givens is regarded by many to be the most desirable free agent receiver on the market, and the $4.8 million a year being offered by the Titans is more money than any available receiver has gotten to this point.

Pittsburgh's Antwaan Randle El and Cleveland's Antonio Bryant, considered to be in the same class as Givens, each relocated, with Randle El signing a seven-year, $31 million deal with Washington Sunday, while Bryant inked a four-year, $15 million deal with San Francisco yesterday.

Givens likely would be the Titans' No. 1 receiver, or at least on equal footing with Drew Bennett, who led the team last season with 58 receptions for 738 yards, making 10 starts in 13 games. His numbers are almost identical to those posted by Givens, who had a career-best 59 catches for 738 yards, also with 10 starts in 13 games.

Meanwhile, the Patriots cut ties yesterday with linebacker Chad Brown, releasing the veteran after just one season.

Brown, a free agent signee last May, was the starter at inside linebacker through the first six games of the season (he wasn't listed as an official starter in Week 3 at Pittsburgh because the Patriots opened in a 4-3 defense) before being sent to the bench. His removal from the lineup coincided with the return of Tedy Bruschi and the move of Mike Vrabel to the inside.

Brown, who hadn't spent significant time at inside linebacker in a decade, was never comfortable in the Patriots' defense, though he elected not to air any complaints about how he was being used.

He did note the added scrutiny he and fellow newcomer Monty Beisel faced in trying to replace Bruschi and Ted Johnson, but he never said he was treated unfairly

Efforts to reach Brown yesterday were unsuccessful, but his agent, Peter Schaffer, said, ''Chad is very grateful for the opportunity to play with New England and he thanks the Patriots organization, the fans and coach [Bill] Belichick for welcoming him. He has nothing but fond memories of his time in New England."

Brown, who owns a home in Denver, visited Pittsburgh, Denver, and New Orleans before electing to come to New England, citing the chance to play in a Super Bowl. Ironically, it was Denver that knocked the Patriots out of the playoffs.

The Patriots picked up just over $1 million in cap money by releasing the 13-year veteran halfway through a two-year contract. He was due a $200,000 roster bonus later this month, and an $800,000 salary for the 2006 season.

Veteran cornerback Tyrone Poole is in a similar situation, due a roster bonus of $500,000 Friday. Poole, who because of injury played only in the season opener last season, is scheduled to make $1.5 million in base pay next season, the same amount the Patriots would save off the cap with his release.

Poole's agent, Hadley Englehardt, said the team has yet to inform him of its intentions.

Outside linebacker Matt Chatham agreed to terms on a three-year contract with the Jets last night. The 6-foot-4-inch, 250-pound Chatham spent the last six seasons with the Patriots, primarily as a reserve and core special teams player.

''Matt's grateful to the Patriots organization for his time there," agent Paul Sheehy said. ''The problem was that they had so many outstanding players at the position that it limited Matt's time on the field.

''He'll have a chance to compete to be a starter in New York and he has a contract that reflects that."

Chatham played in 66 regular-season games with the Patriots, with four starts. He's valuable to the Jets for his knowledge of the defensive scheme of the head coach, former Patriots defensive coordinator Eric Mangini.

Outside linebacker Willie McGinest is scheduled for his first free agent visit today, meeting with the Cleveland Browns, according to his representatives at Premier Sports Management. The Browns, coached by former Patriots defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel, employ the same 3-4 defense in which McGinest has recently thrived with the Patriots.

The Patriots cut offensive lineman Ryan Krug, an undrafted free agent from the University of Connecticut who spent most of the 2005 season on the practice squad and never has played in an NFL regular-season game.

Givens update
The Tennessee Titans have called an 11 a.m. (Central time) press conference for today, and will announce the signing of free-agent receiver David Givens.

Givens opened the free agency period by visiting the Dolphins on Saturday and the Texans on Sunday. He arrived in Tennessee on Monday and the first sign things were heating up was when Givens extended his visit overnight, into Tuesday, to tour Nashville.

"I think it's a good idea to spend time there, a place he has never really been, to see the city before deciding if that is where he wants to live," agent Brad Blank said in Tuesday editions of the Boston Globe.

Blank was holding a Tuesday morning conference call with Titans general manager Floyd Reese to go over final contract details.

Givens is the fourth Patriots player to sign elsewhere in free agency, following receiver Andre' Davis (Bills), tight end Christian Fauria (Redskins) and linebacker Matt Chatham (Jets). Meanwhile, outside linebacker Willie McGinest is scheduled to visit the Browns today.

The Patriots haven't signed any free agents, and one line of thinking is that they're taking a patient approach while working in the background to sign what are expected to be rich extensions with defensive lineman Richard Seymour and receiver Deion Branch. The team generally likes to keep its free-agent intentions quiet, and is known only to have visited with free-agent offensive lineman Kevin Mawae.

The receiver position, however, is suddenly a concern. Of players on the 2005 roster who saw considerable time at the position, only Deion Branch and Bethel Johnson are under contract for 2006. The team could always re-sign Troy Brown, who spoke of his situation on Monday with a West Virginia television station.

The free-agent market at the position was considered thin to begin with and some of the top names remaining include Reche Caldwell (Chargers), Peter Warrick (Seahawks), Josh Reed (Bills), Jabar Gaffney (Texans) and Peerless Price (Cowboys). The Patriots are also likely monitoring the situations of Eric Moulds (Bills) and Keyshawn Johnson (Cowboys) -- both of whom might be let go by their teams.

Pats playing catch-up, With No. 2 WR gone, Keyshawn may fit bill
http://patriots.bostonherald.com/images/patriots/keyshawn03152006.jpg
By John Tomase
Wednesday, March 15, 2006 - Updated: 06:51 AM EST

A common refrain among NFL observers yesterday was perhaps put best by an agent.

“Who the (expletive) is going to play receiver for the Patriots?” he said.

It’s a fair question, and one the Patriots presumably have a plan to answer. But surveying the free agent landscape, there doesn’t appear to be much left in the wake of David Givens signing with the Tennessee Titans. Making matters worse, the draft class is considered thin, too.

Given the spread formations that have served the offense so well during Tom Brady’s tenure, the Patriots can ill afford to field a subpar receiving corps.

The Patriots currently have two experienced receivers under contract - Deion Branch and Bethel Johnson. While they have not yet begun talks to extend the former’s contract, he’s clearly their present and future at the position.

Johnson has largely underachieved, however, and seemed a candidate to be cut. As things stand, though, he’s their No. 2 receiver.

So who’s out there? An interesting name appeared on the market yesterday when the Dallas Cowboys released Keyshawn Johnson, a favorite of coach Bill Parcells who was due a $1 million roster bonus and $1.5 million salary.

The Cowboys are presumed to be clearing the decks to make a run at Terrell Owens, whom the Eagles released yesterday. While it seems highly unlikely the Pats would pursue a player as divisive and highly paid as Owens, Johnson makes a lot of sense.

Reports out of Dallas said the former Jets and Buccaneers standout seeks a two-year contract worth between $2 million and $3 million annually. At age 34, he’s nearing the end of the line, but he posted excellent numbers last year, catching 71 passes for 839 yards and six touchdowns.

The 6-foot-4, 214-pounder’s style of play very much fits the Patriots mold - big, strong, tough and willing to block in the running game. He would provide an excellent complement to the smaller, speedier Branch

Jerome Stanley, Johnson’s agent, did not return calls seeking comment.

After Johnson, the dropoff appears pretty steep. Vikings wide receiver Nate Burleson is a restricted free agent just one season removed from amassing 1,000 yards. He regressed last year after quarterback Daunte Culpepper fell to a knee injury, catching just 30 passes for 328 yards.cw0

The Vikings gave Burleson the lowest possible tender of $712,000, making him much more attractive to opposing teams because signing him will only cost a third-round draft pick. The Vikings would have the right to match any offer sheet he signed.

Another potentially undervalued possibility is Bills receiver Josh Reed, who danced through the Patriots’ secondary for a 51-yard garbage time touchdown in December. Reed is a hard-nosed receiver unafraid to go over the middle. His numbers have suffered during Buffalo’s quarterback shuffle of the last two seasons. Following a career-high 58 receptions in 2003, he dropped to 16 in 2004 and 32 last year.

Reed’s agent, Ben Dogra, said he hasn’t heard from the Patriots.

A name not to forget is Troy Brown. The 13-year veteran told a West Virginia TV station Monday that he hasn’t decided if he’s going to play or retire. He has yet to hear from the Pats.

The remaining free agents are uninspiring. Seattle’s Peter Warrick is a former No. 4 pick who caught 79 passes with Cincinnati in 2003, but has hauled in just 22 since.

San Diego’s Reche Caldwell, Houston’s Jabar Gaffney and New Orleans’ Az Hakim would seem to lack Patriots toughness, while Peerless Price and Rod Gardner are coming off woeful seasons.

Kicker Vinatieri includes Green Bay in travel plans

By TOM SILVERSTEIN
Posted: Mar. 14, 2006

The Green Bay Packers are considering replacing the most prolific kicker in their history with one of the most prolific kickers of the last decade.

In 10 seasons, Adam Vinatieri has kicked 19 winning field goals with less than a minute left, missing just one.

New England free agent Adam Vinatieri, one of only two kickers in National Football League history to score 100 or more points in each of his first 10 seasons, is on the Packers' radar and is expected to make a visit soon.

The NFL Network reported Tuesday that Vinatieri would visit the Packers this week, probably on Friday, to meet with team officials.

Acquiring Vinatieri, the hero of two Super Bowl victories, won't come cheaply. The Patriots designated Vinatieri their franchise player each of the last two seasons, paying him base salaries equal to the average of the five highest-paid kickers in the league the previous year.

In 2005, he was paid a base salary of $2.5 million. Had the Patriots used the tag on him again this year, his salary would have risen to $3 million.

To sign Vinatieri, the Packers are going to have to surpass the $2 million average and $3 million signing bonus Ryan Longwell received Saturday from the Minnesota Vikings. Longwell, the Packers' all-time leading scorer, was the first of three big-name free agent kickers to sign a deal.

Vinatieri and Indianapolis' Mike Vanderjagt are still shopping themselves in a market that appears mixed for kickers. The Packers, Dallas, Miami, New England and Atlanta are all in need of help and would love to have the unflappable Vinatieri, 33.

In 10 seasons, Vinatieri has kicked 19 winning field goals with less than a minute left (including playoffs), missing just one. His career 81.9% field goal accuracy ranks fifth in NFL history.

Vinatieri is represented by the same agents who handle defensive end Aaron Kampman, so it’s possible the two sides have a structure in mind

Patriots Sign S Tebucky Jones and K Martin Gramatica

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - The New England Patriots signed free agent safety Tebucky Jones and free agent kicker Martin Gramatica today. Terms of the agreements were not disclosed.

Jones, 31, was originally drafted by the Patriots in the first round (22nd overall) of the 1998 NFL Draft. The ninth-year veteran returns to New England, where he spent the first five years of his career with the Patriots playing in 72 games with 36 starts from 1998-2002. The 6-foot-2-inch, 218-pound safety has played in a total of 110 career games with 72 starts, and played for the New Orleans Saints (2003-04) and Miami Dolphins (2005) after being traded by the Patriots to New Orleans on April 15, 2003. In eight NFL seasons, Jones has recorded a total of 420 tackles (299 solo), 4.5 sacks, six interceptions for 73 yards, 41 passes defensed, six forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries and 72 special teams tackles. He has one defensive touchdown on a 24-yard fumble return for the Patriots against the New York Jets on Sept. 15, 2002. Last season with the Dolphins, Jones started the first six games of the season and recorded 35 tackles (27 solo) and a career-high two sacks before being placed on injured reserve on Oct. 25, 2005. While with the Saints from 2003-04, Jones started all but one game and finished third on the team in tackles both seasons.

The New Britain, Conn. native was drafted by the Patriots as a cornerback out of Syracuse in the first round of the 1998 draft. After leading the team with 28 special teams tackles as a rookie, he earned his first career start as a cornerback late in the 1999 season. In 2000, he switched to safety, where he started nine of 15 games. In 2001, Jones was the team’s starting free safety, starting 12 of 16 regular season games and all three playoff games. In the 2001 playoffs, Jones contributed to the team’s Super Bowl XXXVI championship run by posting 15 playoff tackles and adding an interception in the AFC Championship Game at Pittsburgh (1/27/02). In 2002, Jones started 13 of 14 games and posted 50 tackles.

When the Patriots traded Jones to the Saints on April 15, 2003, they received three draft choices from New Orleans. The first two picks netted linebacker Tully Banta-Cain (seventh round, 239th overall in the 2003 draft) and safety Dexter Reid (fourth round, 113th overall in the 2004 draft). The third pick (third round, 78th overall in the 2003 draft) was traded to Miami on April 25, 2003 in exchange for a second round pick in the 2004 draft. That pick (second round, 56th overall in the 2004 draft) was traded to Cincinnati in exchange for running back Corey Dillon on April 19, 2004.

Gramatica, 30, will enter his seventh NFL season after spending his first six years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1999-2004) and Indianapolis Colts (2004). He was selected to the Pro Bowl following the 2000 season. The 5-foot-8-inch, 170-pound kicker has converted 137-of-179 career field goals (76.5 percent) and 181-of-183 career extra points (98.9 percent). In seven career playoff games, Gramatica has converted 11-of-12 field goals (91.7 percent) and all 15 extra point attempts. The Kansas State product was originally drafted by Tampa Bay in the third round (80th overall) of the 1999 NFL Draft. He holds Tampa Bay’s all-time career records for scoring (591 points), field goals made (137) and field goals attempted (179). He also owns the top three single-season scoring performances in Tampa Bay history.

In 1999, Gramatica led all NFL rookies with 106 points and was named to the All-Rookie Team by Pro Football Weekly, College and Pro Football Newsweekly and Football Digest. The following season, he earned a Pro Bowl nod and was selected to the Associated Press All-Pro second team as he broke or tied six Buccaneers single-season kicking records. In 2002, he set single-season team records for successful field goals (32) and points (128), as Tampa Bay won Super Bowl XXXVII. In 2003, he led the Buccaneers in points for the fifth straight season, totaling 81 points. Gramatica spent the first 11 games of the 2004 season with Tampa Bay before being waived on Nov. 30, 2004. He was signed by the Indianapolis Colts on Dec. 8, 2004 and handled kickoff duties for the final four regular-season games and both playoff contests. Gramatica spent the 2005 season out of football.

I hate the signing of the kicker but Jones is a good pick up. Plus a good RB might fall to us in the draft so hopefully we grab ethier white or Williams or Holmes if they want a wideout

yea i like that we brought jones back, gramatica i dont really care about..regardless who we draft sign or trade for, no kicker will ever fill vinatieri's shoes..so we should worry about making our offense a powerhouse adding williams or white would help us do that...

Branch hopes to remain with Pats
By John Tomase

http://patriots.bostonherald.com/images/patriots/branch04072006.jpg

Patriots fans generally have two questions regarding Deion Branch: Will he sign an extension, and who will catch passes opposite him?

Branch wishes he knew. He wants and expects to remain in New England beyond this season, but he’ll test the market if he must. As for a new receiving partner to replace David Givens, Branch just hopes it’s someone who can limit the number of double and triple teams he’s sure to see next season.

Branch touched on these and a number of other topics in a recent interview, starting with his contract. He wouldn’t say what kind of discussions the sides have had, but a source said negotiations should pick up around the start of training camp.

“My job is to finish my contract regardless of whether I get an extension or not,” Branch said. “Coach (Bill) Belichick has given me every opportunity to excel here. This is where I want to be, and I’m pretty sure things will work out for me and for us as a unit.

“As far as getting it done now, that’s the part I don’t know. I’ve got a year to go yet. I’m going to enjoy my offseason work, and hopefully we can get something done that makes both parties happy.”

All of that said, Branch can envision the contract becoming more of an issue as time passes.

“I think if the year starts closing in and nothing’s done, then maybe something starts floating across my mind, that hey, I might not be here,” Branch said. “Who knows if nothing is done by the time the year ends? But that’s a long way off. I still have until next March before free agency. Both parties are going to pray on it and hopefully get something done. If not, we’ll talk about the next part later.”

Of more pressing concern to Branch is what kind of team the Patriots will field in September. He expects the club to weather the departures of Givens, Adam Vinatieri and Willie McGinest, but he’ll miss them.

“I wouldn’t be a real player if I said it’s not hard,” Branch said. “But the guys making the decisions are the right people. With coach Belichick and Scott Pioli at the helm, what’s going on may look crazy now, but in the end, those guys know exactly what they’re doing.”

Minus Givens, Branch wonders what kind of attention he’ll receive from opposing defenses.

“I saw a lot of double teams in college,” Branch said. “But I never understood the meaning of the term until last year. Then I really understood the meaning of a defense taking someone completely out of a game.”

Specifically, Branch points to a 41-17 loss to the Chargers on Oct. 2. Facing an assortment of double and triple coverage, he caught one pass.

“That game really opened my eyes,” Branch said. “It wasn’t even double coverage. It was more like a triangle they were running on me with the safety, corner and a linebacker. It was like a box, and I was in the middle. That was a real fun game, let me tell you.”

For those panicking the Patriots will take a step back offensively, Branch noted they still possess one of the most balanced attacks in the game, led by quarterback Tom Brady and complemented by Corey Dillon, Branch, Troy Brown, Daniel Graham and Ben Watson.

“Our offense works so well, it’s not just about who’s on the other side of the field from me,” Branch said. “It’s not like we need a taller guy so we can throw more fades. We take what’s given us.”

In the meantime, Branch wouldn’t mind accelerating contract negotiations, but he’s in no rush. He’ll make just more than $1 million this season, and the team is almost $20 million under the cap, leaving room to negotiate extensions with Branch and Richard Seymour.

I’ve been patient this far,” Branch said. “Another year won’t hurt.

“We’ve got some big names to get signed, Richard and those guys.

“A guy like Richard is going to take everything,” he added with a laugh. “Hopefully when they’re done with him, there’s maybe a little something left for me.”

We gotta sign back Branch and make sure Seymour is signed to a huge contract to keep him happy. We cant lose Richard and Branch cant happen.

yea we cant lose them..if we do i guess the organzation doesnt care about winning anymore since we won 3 already..whats next they gonna get rid of brady and bruschi...

I remember Jones he was pretty good for us. If Grammatica can go back to the way he was his Superbowl year we'll be set. I'm still pissed we lost Adam V. But if Grammatica kicks like he did 2 years ago we're so fu*ked...

i think we will be ok with grammatica..i know we are looking for a young kicker right now to back him up..we jus arent gonna rely on kicking no more..like i said no one will ever be able to fill vinatieri's shoes..we jus gotta move on and think about our future..you know bb and sp have something up their sleeve, their not stupid..

Sources: Walker set for visit to Foxboro
By John Tomase
Saturday, April 29, 2006

According to sources in Denver, disgruntled Green Bay wide receiver Javon Walker boarded a plane last night for Foxboro, a possible precursor to a deal that would bring the injured Pro Bowler to the Patriots.

The visit will give the Pats a chance to examine Walker’s surgically repaired right knee. He tore his ACL in last season’s opener and hasn’t played since, but sources in New Orleans said the knee checked out OK during his visit with the Saints on Thursday.

The Packers initially were seeking a first-round draft pick for Walker, who has demanded a trade. They now are believed to be willing to accept second-round picks this year and next, but it’s unclear if the Patriots will meet that price.

Muddying matters is that Green Bay has not granted Walker’s agents permission to seek a trade. Instead, the Packers are fielding offers and then letting Walker know which teams he can visit. As of yesterday afternoon, they had only given the OK for New Orleans and the Broncos, who Walker visited yesterday.

“It’s complicated,” said agent Fletcher Smith, who works with Kennard McGuire, Walker’s agent. “Green Bay is running the process. Usually the agents receive permission to visit other teams, but not in this case. . . . We’re getting info as it comes to us.”

Smith said the sides spent the day trying to arrange a visit to the Patriots, apparently succeeding around 5 p.m. There was one school of thought that the Broncos, desperate to complete a deal, tried to keep Walker in Denver so he’d never make it to New England.

With the Patriots in need of a No. 2 receiver, Walker is an intriguing option. A former junior college teammate of Deion Branch, he had a breakout 2004, catching 89 passes for 1,382 yards and 12 touchdowns. Smith said that with or without a visit, the Patriots remain legitimate contenders for Walker’s services.

He has one year remaining on his contract for $1.125 million, and he wants a substantial raise. Should he come to New England, the Patriots have an excellent working relationship with McGuire, who represents five players on the roster including linebacker Rosevelt Colvin.

Leery of a player forcing his way out of town, the Packers will not let Walker leave for nothing. In an interview in yesterday’s Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Packers general manager Ted Thompson said he didn’t believe Walker would be dealt before today’s draft, if at all.

“I would not think the odds are in favor of that happening,” he said.

Chad Jackson Press Conference Transcript
5/1/06

New England Patriots second round draft pick(36th overall) Chad Jackson addresses the media at Gillette Stadium.

Q: Were you surprised by your speed at the combine? Did you know you could run that fast?

CJ: I kind of knew I could run pretty fast, but not that fast. My fastest time in the 40 was probably a 4.29 back at the University of Florida last offseason. It was a warm day that day in the dorm and I felt like I was going to run pretty fast, but not [that fast].

Q: Do you think your speed and big-play ability is what caused the Patriots to draft you?

CJ: Yes, I think so, my ability to make things happen after the catch, turn little five-yard routes into 20-yard gains and hopefully touchdowns.

Q: Can you describe Coach [Urban] Meyer's offense? What did you learn?

CJ: Coach Meyer's offense is kind of different. He has a couple of plays that are trickery plays and plays where you just run the ball and plays where he just wants to go down the field. You never know with Coach Meyer. I played the inside receiver this year, the inside slot, and that was kind of difficult for me. It was something that I had to adjust to because it felt like I was the only guy with enough speed and enough size to go in there and run the inside routes with the linebacker.

Q: Did you feel like you were out of position inside?

CJ: Yes I did. I'm more of an outside receiver. I like to go deep and use my speed, come across the middle and make big plays.

Q: Given your great ability, how difficult was it to just deal with a coach who was demanding a lot more from you and also knowing it will be the same here?

CJ: Knowing it's going to be the same here, it is just him pushing me. He just wants me to be the best player that I can be and I thank him for that because at the beginning of the season I was kind of lazy and lackadaisical. But towards the end of the season my blocking became better, my route-running became better and I have more respect for the coach and I thank him for that.

Q: Was it a little shocking to you when Coach Meyer first arrived and what he made you guys do and what he put you through?

CJ: He brought a strength and conditioning coach in, Coach Mick Marotti and Coach [Matt] Balis, and those were two guys that would push you until you were ready to fall out, unto you were ready to pass out. So they wanted to get everything out of you that you had in you. Those are two strength and conditioning coaches that will work you hard. They came in and I remember we had a St. Valentine's Day massacre where we had to be in the weight room at 12 o'clock in the morning on Valentine's Day and we were out there lifting weights, rolling tires in the stadium. It was crazy. It's not like any type of workout that I've been through before.

Q: What did you think of the Patriots before you got drafted by them and also what did you think about Tom Brady and the offense and your possible role here?

CJ: I think it is a great program that is going on right now. They've won three Super Bowl championships and they are building on strong right now. Hopefully I can become a big part of the offense that is going on right now with Tom Brady, Troy Brown and Deion Branch and hopefully I can learn from those guys. Hopefully I can come out here and make big plays and contribute to the team as much as I can.

Q: With the conversations that you've had with other players and guys around the league, what do you see as the biggest adjustment you will have to make coming into the NFL?

CJ: Just people telling me about the speed of the game. They tell me it's the same thing as college. The DB's are the same, it's just they are faster than you or as fast as you are, so you just have to go out there
