The best living writer, in my humble opinion, is a cat name Robert Coover. He's been writing since the 60s and teaches now at Brown University, where he started the creative writing department and practically invented a genre of creative writing called electronic writing.
He's mainly concerned with myth, and how societies create myth to address hopes, dreams, events, struggles, failures, etc. He loves to rework old fairy tales into modern ones. His language is alive.
If you've never read him before, I suggest starting with his latest book, Stepmother. It was published by McSweeney's last year, and will give you a good idea of his talent. It's also relatively short -- it will only take you a couple hours to finish.
