Wrote this in 9th grade, just found it on my hard-drive...whatchall think:
It was a dark and misty night. Jim Katz slowly crept down the bleak and shady street on his way home. Not looking straight ahead of him was a metal pole, which he walked face first into. He injured his left cheek, and felt his glasses falling until hearing the inevitable smash of it’s lenses upon the hard concrete. Fuming with rage, he continued on, stumbling quite often, grabbing hold onto the walls of buildings until he made it to the steps of his apartment.
The next day, he searched around town for an optometrist. He spotted a small brick building with a picture of glasses painted on a window which looked like it had never been cleaned. He gazed at the sign and the dirty window and was unable to see through the glass, which struck him as very odd. He shrugged it off, and walked into the building. The shop was dimly lit with a solitary light bulb hanging from the ceiling, it’s light reaching each corner of the room. Jim was immediately greeted by a middle-aged man with greasy long hair, with fillings on half his teeth. Jim gave the man the prescription for his glasses. As the man was starting on the lenses, Jim attempted to strike up a conversation, but the man simply ignored him. After a short while, the strange man finished making the lenses and handed them to him along with a free frame as well. Jim stepped outside only to see no people or cars, which struck him as very odd. He found himself walking in a seemingly desolate and deserted part of town. It was almost as if he was in a “ghost-town.” He pulled out the newly crafted glasses, and to his shock, he noticed that the lenses were now dark, as if they were sunglasses! He was a bit disappointed yet dumbfounded at the same time. Jim said “what the heck”, and just put the sunglasses on.
The deserted neighborhood he was in had suddenly changed! Jim felt a heavy light stressing his eyes with the glasses on. After a while, he was able to make out his vision a bit more clearly. Jim turned a corner and saw that the street was packed with people, cars, and bustling stores. He couldn’t believe his eyes, or for that matter, his sunglasses! He noticed that all the men were wearing suits and all the women were wearing fancy, old-fashioned dresses. The architecture of the buildings was very old-fashioned as well. Confused, Jim began walking through the neighborhood looking at all the shops. He asked a few people where the best restaurant was, but they all ignored him. “Are these people ghosts or something,” thought Jim. It suddenly occurred to him that he was one hundred years into the past. Jim became very frustrated and he quickly took off his glasses. That light that he had once felt on his eyes had left him. The street was empty again, and Jim felt very awkward and lonely, just standing there in the dark street. He walked around a bit; he found not a soul!
He took out his glasses once more to see if what he had experienced moments before wasn’t just a hallucination. He put the glasses on, but everything looked the same. Abruptly, he took the glasses off and inspected them. The lenses were now clear! “How did this happen” he yelled. He impatiently put the glasses back on, but still only saw the end of the gloomy street he had been standing in all along. He tried once again, but to no avail. In a fury, he threw the glasses into a dumpster, and walked off, forever deserting the realm he had witnessed on that bizarre day.
